First Lady Melania Trump visited Children’s National Hospital on Thursday, where she spent time with young patients crafting patriotic decorations ahead of Independence Day, as reported by The Independent Journal Review.

The visit marked a continuation of a long-standing tradition of first ladies supporting the hospital, a custom that dates back to the Truman administration.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania arrive for Christmas dinner at the ballroom at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Dec. 24, 2019.

The visit included a stop at the Bunny Mellon Healing Garden, a rooftop space Melania Trump originally dedicated during President Donald Trump’s first term.

The garden is named in honor of Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, the philanthropist and designer of the White House Rose Garden. It serves as a tribute to the contributions of America’s first ladies to the hospital’s pediatric patients.

The garden was decorated with red, white, and blue in celebration of the upcoming holiday. Trump was joined by White House groundskeeper Dale Haney, and together they examined a newly planted yellow rose bush, donated earlier in the week by the White House.

During the visit, the First Lady also held a private meeting with a young transplant patient, emphasizing her personal involvement in child health initiatives and hospital outreach efforts.

Later that day, Melania Trump was scheduled to join President Donald Trump in the Oval Office for a meeting with Edan Alexander, the recently freed American-Israeli hostage.

Alexander, a native of New Jersey and a member of the Israel Defense Forces, was held captive by Hamas in Gaza for 584 days.

He was released in May and met with the President and First Lady in what White House officials described as a significant moment in the administration’s continued commitment to repatriating American hostages.

The First Lady’s visit to Children’s National Hospital is part of a broader Independence Day week agenda for the Trump White House, which includes celebrations, veteran outreach, and meetings with families of American citizens affected by overseas conflicts.
