A gunman who opened fire on Miami police officers Thursday morning, wounding two, was later found dead inside a home where he had barricaded himself following an hours-long standoff, authorities confirmed, as reported by he New York Post.

Miami Police Chief Manny Morales identified the suspect as 27-year-old Mason Triana. He was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound inside a residence in the city’s Allapattah neighborhood. It was not immediately known whether Triana was shot by police or took his own life.

Chief Morales said Triana had a “criminal past,” though the Miami Herald reported that while he had been arrested previously, he had never been convicted of a crime.

Police said Triana’s brother was taken into custody at the scene but is being treated only as a witness.

The confrontation began around 6:15 a.m. when officers responded to a call about an unattended vehicle that had been left in the middle of the street and was being towed. Officers checked the scene and found nothing unusual at the time.

About an hour later, police were alerted to multiple gunshots through a technology-based detection system and returned to the area.

When they arrived, officers found a vehicle “riddled with bullets,” Morales said. Moments later, Triana allegedly opened fire, striking two officers — one in the knee and another in the ankle.

“One of the injured officers is a sergeant, and the other is a female officer,” Morales told reporters. “Both are in stable condition and in good spirits.”

Following the shooting, Triana retreated into a nearby house and barricaded himself inside. Police established a perimeter and exchanged gunfire with the suspect at least once during the standoff.

According to early reports, the initial gunfire may have stemmed from a domestic dispute between Triana and his brother. “It appears the original disturbance involved a dispute between siblings,” Morales said.

Negotiators and family members were called to the scene to try to persuade Triana to surrender, according to CBS News Miami. After several hours without communication, a tactical team entered the home and discovered Triana dead from a gunshot wound.

Nearby residents were urged to shelter in place during the incident. “We asked people to stay inside and keep their distance,” Morales said.

Neighbor Jose Espinales told NBC 6 he was jogging nearby when he heard what sounded like automatic gunfire. “Maybe like in 10 seconds, my ear actually could calculate like 30 rounds,” he said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident, and the Miami Police Department’s internal affairs unit will review the officers’ response. Both wounded officers are expected to recover.
