Michelle Obama revealed Monday night that she and her husband were scheduled to meet with filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, on the same night the couple was found dead inside their Los Angeles home, an appearance that underscored the personal shock surrounding the killings, as The New York Post reported.

Speaking on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after being asked how she was processing the deaths, the former first lady said the news arrived just as plans were already in place.

“We were supposed to be seeing them that night — last night — and we got the news,” Obama said.

Obama said she and her husband were devastated by the deaths of Reiner and his wife, describing the couple as close friends for “many, many years.”

Her remarks followed confirmation from authorities that the longtime Hollywood figure and his wife were found dead Sunday afternoon at their Brentwood mansion.

“Let me just say this: Unlike some people, Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you would ever want to know,” Obama said.

Her comments appeared to reference remarks made by President Trump following Reiner’s death, in which he criticized the filmmaker in a Truth Social post, calling him “deranged” and “tortured and struggling.”

“They are not deranged or crazed,” Obama continued.

“What they have always been are passionate people who — in a time when there’s not a lot of courage going on — they were the kind of people who were ready to put their actions behind what they cared about. And they cared about their family.”

Following confirmation of the deaths, former President Barack Obama released a public statement praising Reiner and his wife, highlighting both their professional accomplishments and personal commitments.

“Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele,” Obama wrote on X. “Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen.”

“But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action,” he continued.

“Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”

Michelle Obama expanded further on their relationship during the television interview.

“And they cared about this country. And they cared about fairness and equity. And that is the truth. I do know them,” she said.

Reiner, 78, was a major Hollywood figure known for directing and producing widely recognized films, including “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “This Is Spinal Tap.”

NEW YORK – JANUARY 07: Rob Reiner attends the 2014 National Board Of Review Awards Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street on January 7, 2014 in New York City.

His wife, Michele Reiner, was 68. The couple was discovered deceased at their Brentwood residence on Sunday afternoon, according to law enforcement.

Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, has been taken into custody and formally charged with their murders. Authorities have not publicly detailed a motive.

Sources told The Post that the couple’s 28-year-old daughter, Romy Reiner, discovered her parents’ bodies and told investigators that her brother “should be a suspect” because he is “dangerous.”

Nick Reiner, who has a documented history of drug addiction and mental health struggles, was reportedly placed on suicide watch following his arrest. He is currently being held on $4 million bail as the case proceeds.

The investigation remains ongoing.
