Leon El-Alamin, a Democratic city councilman in Flint, Michigan, who previously had a lengthy criminal history cleared under Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s “Clean Slate” initiative, has been charged with multiple offenses stemming from an alleged violent assault on a woman earlier this month, as reported by The New York Post.

According to court documents filed by the Mount Morris Township Police Department, El-Alamin, 44, was arrested on July 10 and is facing both felony and misdemeanor charges for alleged domestic violence and assault.

The alleged victim told authorities that El-Alamin became enraged with her while she was checking her emails. She claimed he punched her in the face, dragged her by her hair, and choked her.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton confirmed the details to WNEM, stating:

“She had bruising on her face, which is consistent with being struck in the face. She had a mark on her neck, which is consistent with the allegation of being choked, and she claims she had been dragged out by her hair.”

Leyton added that investigators found strands of hair on the ground, corroborating the woman’s account.

Police also reported discovering an unregistered firearm inside the residence.

El-Alamin, once known as Leon Wilson, served a prison sentence beginning in 2003 for drug trafficking and weapons charges. He admitted in his personal biography that he had been involved in a drug turf war and was left in a coma after a shootout.

While incarcerated, he converted to Islam, changed his name, and later founded the M.A.D.E. Institute, a nonprofit designed to support at-risk youth and formerly incarcerated individuals.

In April 2021, El-Alamin’s criminal record was expunged under the Clean Slate Act, a sweeping law backed by Michigan Democrats that allows for automatic or petition-based expungement of certain criminal convictions.

Following the expungement, El-Alamin became a vocal critic of the criminal justice system, at one point writing on LinkedIn:

“Mass Incarceration is one of the greatest threats to our democracy in America.”

He was elected to the Flint City Council in November and has been publicly associated with prominent Democrats, including U.S. Senator Cory Booker and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

After news of the charges surfaced, El-Alamin did not offer public comment through his legal team but issued a statement via the M.A.D.E. Institute’s Facebook page.

“These recent allegations are both false and deeply disheartening, but I remain confident in the truth and in the legal process. My legal team is actively handling the matter, and I fully intend to clear my name and win this case.”

El-Alamin’s bond was set at $7,500. He appeared in court for a hearing on July 18. Governor Whitmer’s office has not responded to requests for comment.
