MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski revealed this week that she and her husband, Joe Scarborough, have remained in contact with President Donald Trump since their widely discussed meeting at Mar-a-Lago following the 2024 election, as reported by The New York Post.
Brzezinski, who co-hosts Morning Joe with Scarborough, spoke candidly about the relationship during an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live.”
When asked directly whether the couple continued engaging with Trump, she replied, “Yeah.” Pressed on the nature of that contact, she added, “It’s called our job.”
Brzezinski said it was difficult to gauge whether Trump currently harbored frustration toward the pair, who have often been critical of him on-air.
“I have a hard time answering that because he could be mad right now,” she told Cohen. She explained that maintaining relationships with political leaders is part of her approach to journalism.
“I think it’s important to know the people that you’re covering and to have as much insight as possible.”
She added that she and Scarborough have approached every White House the same way. “Every single president that we’ve covered, we have known and we have known everybody in the White House and tried our best to get as much insight on and off the record as possible,” she said.

Her remarks marked the first official acknowledgment that contact with Trump continued beyond the initial Mar-a-Lago meeting, which took place in November 2024.
At the time, the couple described the meeting as an attempt to “restart communications” in a politically divided climate.
The disclosure of that trip sparked backlash in political and media circles. Progressive commentators accused the pair of hypocrisy, while critics on social media charged they were “normalizing” Trump despite years of criticism.
MSNBC insiders also voiced concerns, and ratings for Morning Joe declined after the announcement. Nielsen reported a 15 percent drop in total viewers and a 41 percent decline among adults aged 25–54, the key demographic for advertisers.
Brzezinski and Scarborough defended their decision, arguing that access to political figures is fundamental to their work. They also noted privately that they were concerned about potential retaliation from Trump, citing his record of publicly targeting media figures.
The controversy extended beyond MSNBC. On The View, co-host Sunny Hostin accused them of “kissing his ring.” Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley suggested the pair’s decision coincided with falling ratings, saying, “They saw their ratings.”
During her conversation with Cohen, Brzezinski also commented on Democratic politics, praising California Gov. Gavin Newsom for his use of social media to counter Trump.
“Half of the stuff he does is freaking hilarious,” she said, while also noting that Newsom “can articulate it probably better than anybody.” She argued his approach resonated by mixing humor with substance, giving Democrats a clearer message.
The White House has not commented on Brzezinski’s remarks.
