Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino said local law enforcement officers in multiple cities, including Minneapolis, are expressing support for federal immigration agents on the ground despite public statements by local leaders opposing federal operations.

Bovino spoke with Fox News correspondent Aishah Hasnie about reactions from municipal police officers to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol activity as tensions have risen in Minnesota amid increased enforcement and protests following multiple shootings involving federal agents.

“And something else, Aishah, that we’re seeing is that rank and file of many of the area police departments, including the Minneapolis Police Department, many of their rank and file police officers are coming up to our agents on the ground saying, thank you for what you’re doing. We support you 100%,” Bovino said.

“That’s in direct opposition to say, a mayor Frey calling for cops to fight federal agents.”

Bovino said the support from rank-and-file officers extends beyond Minneapolis to other major cities.

“So we’ve got the support of the rank and file and the American public, this mission is going to continue,” he said.

Hasnie noted that while officers reportedly want to offer assistance to federal agents, their ability to do so may be limited by local policy.

“So they want to help. I mean, they’re coming up to you and telling you that they actually do want to help, but their hands are tied,” Hasnie said.

Bovino agreed with her assessment and expanded on the trend, noting similar sentiments among officers in other jurisdictions.

“Exactly. We’ve seen this in California and Los Angeles, we saw this with Chicago rank and file police officers. And guess what? We’re seeing it in Minneapolis also,” Bovino said.

He extended an invitation to Minneapolis officers who support federal enforcement efforts and are interested in joining federal agencies.

“And to any of those Minneapolis Police officers, and I’m hearing this is happening that want to join the US, border patrol or ICE, we welcome you with open arms,” Bovino said. “We support you. We support you, making American cities like Minneapolis a safer place.”

Bovino also offered personal support to officers considering a transition to federal law enforcement.

“So I’d be happy to meet personally with those officers that might be wanting to join a law enforcement agency that supports them,” he said.

The exchange took place against the backdrop of ongoing federal immigration enforcement activities in Minneapolis that have drawn national attention.

Recent incidents involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have sparked protests and political debate across the country.

Federal agents shot and wounded a Venezuelan man during an immigration operation in north Minneapolis after officials say the man and others allegedly attacked an officer during a traffic stop.

In related developments, a separate ICE agent fatally shot Minneapolis resident Renee Good during an earlier encounter, prompting widespread demonstrations and calls for changes to federal immigration enforcement.

Local leaders in Minneapolis, including Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey, have criticized federal actions and urged caution or opposition to certain enforcement tactics, while state and federal officials have defended the operations.

The tension between local policy and federal enforcement highlights ongoing disagreements over immigration policy and public safety responsibilities.

Bovino’s comments highlight a divide between the positions of some municipal officials and the views of individual rank-and-file police officers, according to the Border Patrol commander.

He suggested that officers who feel constrained by local policy and supportive of federal enforcement might find alignment with agencies that operate under federal immigration law.
