Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara provided details Wednesday evening about a shooting involving a federal agent in north Minneapolis, warning that unlawful activity by a gathered crowd was creating a dangerous and escalating situation.
In a public statement, O’Hara said Minneapolis police were first alerted to the incident shortly before 7 p.m.
“My name is Brian O’Hara. I am the Minneapolis Police Chief. At 6:51 p.m., Minneapolis Police received a 911 call reporting a shooting on the 600 block of two-four Avenue North,” O’Hara said.
According to O’Hara, preliminary information indicates the shooting occurred during a physical confrontation between a federal agent and an adult male outside a residence.
“Preliminary information indicates that there was a struggle with a federal agent in front of the resident,” O’Hara said.
“During the struggle, the federal agent discharged his weapon, striking one adult male.”
O’Hara said the individual who was shot retreated into the residence following the incident and initially refused to exit.

“The adult male then retreated inside of the residence, where he remained inside and refused to come out,” O’Hara said.
Federal agents later entered the residence and took the individual into custody for medical treatment.
“Eventually, federal agents made entry into the residence, and the individual is brought to an ambulance where he has been transported to the hospital,” O’Hara said.
O’Hara said Minneapolis police secured the scene and turned the investigation over to state and federal authorities.
“Minneapolis Police have secured the crime scene around the location, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension as well as the FBI are on the scene processing the evidence,” he said.
As the investigation continued, O’Hara said a crowd gathered in the area and began engaging in unlawful behavior, prompting a request for additional law enforcement resources.
“There’s a crowd gathered in the area, and we have called for mutual aid from the Minnesota State Patrol and Hennepin County Sheriff,” O’Hara said.
He said members of the crowd threw fireworks at officers and that chemical agents were deployed multiple times as police worked to restore order.
“The crowd is engaging in unlawful acts,” O’Hara said.
“They have thrown fireworks at police officers and in multiple times, gas has been deployed. Police are attempting to disperse this unlawful assembly.”
O’Hara urged anyone in the area to leave immediately, warning that continued unrest could worsen an already volatile situation.
“At this time, I urge anyone that is at the scene to leave immediately,” he said.
“This is already a very tense situation, and we do not need this to escalate any further.”
O’Hara concluded by expressing confidence in the investigative process and the agencies involved.
“I have faith that the investigators are involved will follow every lead in this case and ensure it is completed to its logical conclusion,” he said.
