Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota are defending their decision to provide free healthcare to illegal aliens, even as the state’s publicly funded insurance program, MinnesotaCare, has exceeded enrollment projections by nearly 30 percent in just four months.

Members of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) rallied outside the House chamber on Friday in opposition to a new policy that would end MinnesotaCare coverage for undocumented adult immigrants by the end of the year.

Coverage for undocumented minors would continue under the revised plan.

Holding signs that read “We Stand with Immigrants” and “Empathy: Good Government’s Superpower,” lawmakers and supporters read anonymous testimonials from individuals who said they received life-saving care through the taxpayer-funded program.

MinnesotaCare began offering health coverage to low-income undocumented individuals on January 1.

The program was originally expected to enroll 5,700 undocumented individuals in its first year.

However, state officials confirmed that more than 20,000 have already enrolled—nearly quadruple the projection. Of those, 24 percent are children under 18, according to data from the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

Between January and the end of April, MinnesotaCare paid out $3.9 million in claims related to care for undocumented enrollees.

State leaders reached a deal earlier this week to limit the program’s scope after costs surged well beyond initial estimates.

Despite the financial overrun, DFL lawmakers pledged to continue fighting for the full restoration of benefits.

Democratic State Senator Alice Mann, a vocal supporter of the initiative, claimed that Republicans were prepared to risk a government shutdown over the issue.

“We had negotiations with a party who does not care about the wellbeing of people,” Mann said.

Mann further accused Republicans of using the issue for political gain, claiming their opposition to continued benefits for undocumented immigrants was racially motivated.

“To say that we protected, essentially, homegrown Minnesotans. But all these other people who look different, who speak a different language, who have different customs, we do not care about them, we will not pay for them, we will not welcome them, and they can suffer, they can die, and we don’t care,” she said.

Democrats in Minnesota are saying they will fight “until the very end” to provide taxpayer-funded state healthcare for ILLEGALS.

Republicans, however, have made clear they do not support eliminating MinnesotaCare.

Their proposal seeks to end free healthcare benefits specifically for undocumented adults, citing concerns about long-term costs and sustainability of the program.

A spokesperson for Republican lawmakers said the effort to rein in the program was about ensuring resources are available for legal residents of Minnesota, especially as many continue to face rising insurance premiums, longer wait times for care, and an already overstretched healthcare system.

The dispute over healthcare coverage comes as the state faces broader challenges managing costs across various public programs.

Republican legislators have called for increased oversight and accountability for state spending, especially as enrollment in MinnesotaCare continues to expand beyond original projections.

Democrats say they intend to revisit the policy during the next legislative session and will push for full reinstatement of coverage for all undocumented immigrants.

As of now, the revised policy is expected to take effect at the start of 2025, ending taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits for adult undocumented immigrants while maintaining benefits for children.
