Minnesota Election Official Confirms Illegal Aliens with Driver’s Licenses Could Vote Under Walz Law [WATCH]

A Minnesota election official confirmed during a state House meeting this week that individuals who are not U.S. citizens but hold state-issued driver’s licenses could be permitted to vote under the current system, raising new concerns over election integrity in the state, as reported by Breitbart.

The discussion centered on a law signed in March 2023 by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz that allows illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses. According to PolitiFact, approximately 81,000 people are living illegally in Minnesota and could be eligible for these licenses.

During the hearing, a legislator questioned how the law interacts with voting eligibility when a noncitizen presents a valid Minnesota driver’s license. “So we give a driver’s license to anyone here. You don’t have to be a citizen,” the lawmaker said.

“If someone comes in, they register, they have the driver’s license, but they have an incorrect social [security number], or no social, or whatever, then they become incomplete, but if they walk in to vote with their driver’s license, does that make them okay?”

An election official replied, “If [the illegal alien] presents the election judge that acceptable identification document, that would clear the challenge from the roster and they would be permitted to cast a ballot.”

When asked to clarify, the lawmaker followed up: “So just to clarify, someone who is not a citizen but who presents a driver’s license … could be permitted to vote?” The response confirmed that such a scenario is possible under current procedures.

Governor Walz signed the driver’s license measure into law last year, expanding eligibility for state-issued identification to individuals regardless of citizenship or immigration status.

Under current Minnesota law, proof of citizenship is not required to obtain a driver’s license or register to vote. Election officials verify eligibility primarily through self-attestation and limited database checks.

With the expansion of licenses to noncitizens, lawmakers have expressed concern that the system could allow ineligible individuals to register and vote undetected.

Opponents of the policy have called for reform, including separate identification cards for noncitizens and a requirement for proof of citizenship before voter registration.

Supporters of the law maintain that it improves road safety and helps residents, regardless of status, comply with state driving laws.
