A regular morning at a local coffee shop in Houston’s Woodland Heights neighborhood escalated into a dramatic chase as a woman successfully confronted and overpowered a thief to retrieve her stolen backpack.
The entire incident, which took place last Monday outside Uncle Bean’s Coffee, was captured on surveillance footage.
Claudia, a frequent patron of the coffee shop, was engrossed in her work on her computer when her morning was disrupted. Describing the moment the theft occurred, Claudia said, “I was just minding my own business. I just feel a presence.”

The surveillance video revealed two women approaching her before one abruptly snatched her backpack, and both fled the scene.
Claudia’s immediate reaction was spurred by the abruptness of the act. “She wasn’t gentle. Maybe if she would have been gentle taking the backpack, I wouldn’t have noticed, but she was pretty abrupt. It startled me,” she explained.
Without hesitation, Claudia sprang into action, chasing down the suspects. The pursuit ended with Claudia tackling one of the women in the middle of the street, a confrontation that ensured she regained possession of her bag.
Reflecting on her impulsive reaction, Claudia shared, “I had that moment: ‘This is not happening.’ Really, I cannot tell you what I did, why I did it. It was mental-activated, and I just was on automatic.”
Emerging victorious, Claudia managed to recover her backpack, which contained several valuable items, including her American and Cuban passports.
Grateful for her physical fitness, she credited her paddle training for her ability to sprint after and subdue the thief. “Thankfully, the training from my paddle lessons has been paying off, so I felt in shape to run after them,” she remarked.
In the aftermath of the ordeal, Claudia has taken additional measures to secure her belongings, purchasing a hook for her bag to prevent future thefts.
Demonstrating her resolve and a touch of humor, she warned potential thieves, “Next time, if they try to grab the backpack, they’ll drag the table with them. Don’t try to steal from a Cuban.”
Following the incident, Claudia was able to alert a nearby police officer and filed a report with the Houston Police Department.
Authorities are now seeking help from the public to identify the suspects involved in the attempted theft.
Anyone with information regarding the suspects seen in the video footage is encouraged to contact local law enforcement as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
