Travis Decker, a 32-year-old homeless U.S. Army veteran, has been the subject of a nationwide manhunt since June 2, when the girls’ bodies were discovered near Rock Island Campground in Chelan County.
Authorities found plastic bags over their heads and zip ties around their wrists. The medical examiner confirmed the cause of death as suffocation.
Decker had taken the girls for a “planned visitation” on May 30 but failed to return them that evening, prompting their mother to report them missing. His abandoned truck was located near the campsite, but he remains at large.
According to Whitney’s attorney, Arianna Cozart, Travis Decker had struggled with mental health issues, including paranoia and borderline personality disorder. The couple had separated over concerns for the children’s safety.
Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison said law enforcement remains concerned that individuals sympathetic to Decker might assist him in avoiding arrest. “He’s accused of murder — not just once, but three times — and he is a danger,” Morrison stated.
Federal authorities have joined the search effort as the case continues to unfold.
