Prosecutors in Utah have formally charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder and multiple related offenses in the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, as reported by Fox News.
Court filings detail Robinson’s alleged political radicalization and his own mother’s account of the dramatic changes in her son leading up to the shooting.
Robinson, who was once a scholarship recipient and promising student, is accused of fatally shooting Kirk while the conservative commentator spoke to a crowd at Utah Valley University (UVU) on September 10.
Kirk, 31, a father of two, was answering questions in the school’s courtyard when he was struck by a round fired from a rooftop roughly 200 yards away. He died from his injuries at the scene.
According to court documents, Robinson’s mother told investigators she had noticed a major shift in her son over the last year. She described him as becoming “more political,” leaning left, and supporting “pro-gay and trans rights.”
She also recalled heated arguments between Robinson and his father, who disagreed strongly with his son’s new views. At one point, she said, Robinson dismissed Kirk’s UVU appearance as “stupid” and claimed Kirk “spreads too much hate.”
Prosecutors allege Robinson targeted Kirk specifically “because of his political expression.” His parents recognized him from surveillance images released after the shooting.

His father confronted him, leading Robinson to imply he was the shooter. Prosecutors said Robinson told his father he “couldn’t go to jail and just wanted to end it.”
Robinson was charged Tuesday with aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering. He also faces a violent offense enhancement for allegedly committing the crime in the presence of a child.
Prosecutors have filed notice of their intent to seek the death penalty.
Court records reveal text messages between Robinson and his romantic partner, a transgender roommate.
In those exchanges, Robinson allegedly confessed to planning the attack “for a bit over a week,” described discarding clothing and the rifle, and instructed his partner to delete messages and remain silent.

Authorities later recovered a Mauser .30-06 rifle wrapped in a towel near UVU.
Robinson graduated from Pine View High School in 2021 before briefly attending Utah State University as a pre-engineering major. He later enrolled at Dixie Technical College in an electrical apprenticeship program.
Family photos shared with investigators show Robinson traveling with his family, fishing, and attending school events before his alleged radicalization.
Utah County District Attorney Jeff Gray confirmed the charges and cited Robinson’s own words after the shooting: “I had enough of [Kirk’s] hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said investigators are also probing whether Robinson had accomplices. “It appears from the data we’ve accumulated that this ideology had infected him and had taken over,” Bongino said.
“He was intent on making Charlie his target, and people may have known in advance.”
