Marcee Gray, the mother of 14-year-old Colt Gray, who allegedly carried out a deadly shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, was indicted on charges of elder abuse this week.
Gray, 43, faces several charges, including exploitation and intimidation of an elderly person, false imprisonment, criminal damage to property, and theft.
These charges stem from a November 2022 incident in which Gray is accused of abusing her then 73-year-old mother, Deborah Polhamus.

According to an incident report cited by The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, Marcee allegedly bound her mother to a chair and left her there for nearly 24 hours after Polhamus refused to accompany her daughter to confront her ex-husband, Colin Gray.
Marcee reportedly became upset with her mother, leading to physical violence, and then tied her to a chair, took her iPhone, and damaged parts of the home, including a bathroom mirror and the back door.
Polhamus was eventually found by a friend, Annie Brown, who had been contacted after Brown became concerned when she couldn’t reach Polhamus by phone.
The indictment adds to an already complex and tragic situation involving the Gray family.
Marcee’s son, Colt Gray, is currently facing four counts of murder following the September 4 shooting at Apalachee High School, where two students and two teachers were killed.

Colt allegedly brought an AR-15-style rifle to school and opened fire, leaving several others injured.
The victims of the shooting were identified as Mason Schermerhorn, 14, Christian Angulo, 14, Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) confirmed that Colt managed to bring the weapon into the school by concealing it in his backpack.
He reportedly left his classroom under the pretense of needing to go to the front office, only to later emerge with the rifle and begin shooting.
In the wake of the shooting, Marcee Gray issued a public apology to the families of the victims, expressing deep remorse for the tragedy.
In a letter addressed to the families, she wrote, “To the parents and families of those affected by the tragic events at Apalachee High School, I want to say that I am so sorry from the bottom of my heart. If I could take the place of Mason and Christian, I would without a second thought.” She also expressed her sorrow for the two teachers who lost their lives, stating that her “heart breaks for the two teachers who gave their lives while in the service of teaching and protecting our children.”
Marcee had reportedly warned the school about her son’s troubling behavior prior to the shooting.
According to an interview with ABC News, Marcee called the school counselor on the morning of the shooting after receiving a concerning message from Colt, in which he apologized for his actions.
His father, Colin Gray, also received similar messages from his son.
The texts reportedly read, “I’m sorry, Mom” and “You’re not to blame for this.”
Colt Gray has been charged as an adult for the murders of the four victims, and additional charges are expected.

Authorities have also charged his father, Colin Gray, 54, with multiple counts, including involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children.
According to investigators, Colin Gray allegedly gave Colt access to the rifle used in the shooting, making him the first parent in Georgia to be charged in connection with a school shooting. Colin is facing charges of second-degree murder and other related offenses.
The elder abuse charges against Marcee Gray add another layer to the family’s legal troubles.
The abuse incident occurred in November 2022, just months before the school shooting.
According to the police report, Marcee allegedly became violent after her mother refused to accompany her to confront her ex-husband.
Marcee reportedly threw her mother against a wall, causing injuries, and then restrained her in a chair, taking her phone so she could not call for help.
Polhamus suffered a cut on her wrist and bruises on her arms and legs as a result of the assault.
Despite the severity of the incident, Polhamus reportedly told authorities she did not want her daughter to face felony charges for the rest of her life.
Marcee Gray’s legal history includes previous charges related to drug use and property damage.
In a separate incident, she was arrested in December 2022 after being found in possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl during a traffic stop.
She was granted bond in April 2023 and released from custody, but the elder abuse charges resurfaced as part of the ongoing investigation.
The case has drawn significant attention, as the Gray family’s history of legal issues, domestic strife, and involvement with child welfare services has raised questions about whether warning signs were missed.
The family had been involved with Georgia’s child welfare agency following their eviction in 2022, and law enforcement had visited the family in May 2023 after receiving an FBI tip about threats to carry out a school shooting.
At the time, Colt denied making the threats, and Colin Gray assured authorities that while he kept hunting rifles in the home, Colt was not allowed to use them unsupervised.
As both Colt and Colin Gray face life in prison for their respective charges, the legal proceedings will continue to unfold in the coming months.
The tragedy at Apalachee High School has left the community grieving, and the charges against Marcee Gray further complicate the family’s already fraught situation.
