The mother of missing Texas teenager Camila Mendoza Olmos repeatedly said “So close to home” after authorities recovered a body Tuesday in a field near the family’s San Antonio residence, according to a volunteer who assisted in the search, as reported by The New York Post.
Sheriff’s deputies and FBI agents located human remains in a Bexar County field nearly one week after Olmos, 19, disappeared during what her family believed was a routine Christmas Eve morning walk.
The field is located roughly 250 yards from the family’s home.

Frank Trevino, who has been helping search efforts, described the moment Olmos’ mother, Rosario Olmos, learned of the discovery.
“So close to home,” Rosario Olmos repeatedly said, Trevino told the Daily Mail.

“Her eyes were not there,” he added, describing her reaction.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the body appeared to have been in the field for approximately five or six days.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet officially identified the remains or determined the cause of death.
A firearm was recovered near the body. Authorities previously confirmed that a gun owned by a relative had been reported missing from the Olmos home after Camila disappeared.
Officials have not formally stated whether the recovered weapon is the same firearm, though the Daily Mail reported it was a 9mm Luger pistol, the same type as the missing gun.
A source told the outlet that the remains matched the description of Olmos, though official identification has not yet been made.
Camila Olmos, described by family members as an aspiring orthodontist, was last seen by her mother on the morning of Dec. 24.
Rosario Olmos said her daughter got out of bed and was believed to be heading out for her regular walk.
Surveillance video captured outside the home shows Olmos wearing pajama shorts and a black hoodie while searching through her car before leaving on foot.
Investigators said Olmos left her cellphone behind in her bedroom. It remains unclear what she was looking for in the vehicle.
Authorities previously searched the same field where the body was found but returned after learning that thick brush may have obscured parts of the area during earlier searches.
Salazar said investigators do not currently expect foul play. He told reporters that indicators point toward possible “self-harm.”
Salazar also said authorities uncovered information suggesting Olmos had been experiencing suicidal ideations and showed signs of depression.
He said it appeared Olmos “was a young person going through a very tough time in her life,” adding that she had been struggling with school, work, and a relationship that had recently ended.
The sheriff said he hopes the medical examiner’s office will confirm the identity of the remains and determine the cause and manner of death “in the next day or two.”
Olmos’ father, Alfonso Mendoza, strongly disputed claims that his daughter would take her own life.
“She would never do something like that her herself, to us,” Mendoza told the Daily Mail. “She just wouldn’t. Not ever.”
“People talk. But they don’t know my daughter like I do,” he said, adding that her recent breakup was mutual and respectful.
“It ended on good terms, in a lovely way,” he said, and “wasn’t something she was depressed about.”
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities await confirmation from the medical examiner.
