MSNBC: Sexism Is the Reason Why Abigail Spanberger is in Trouble

I’m not certain that Abigail Spanberger is in deep trouble–the gamblers at Polymarket and Kalshi give her about a 95% chance of winning, but at the very least, we know that her campaign is doing badly. Her electoral prospects are buoyed by the government shutdown and Virginia’s tendency to switch the party in power every gubernatorial election. 

The pundits at MSNBC are worried, though, and they think they know why Spanberger’s message, such as it is, is landing with a thud: misogyny.

No. Really. Voters aren’t enthusiastic about this personality-free candidate with radical positions on social issues because they think poorly of women.

Democrats have three answers to every problem: racism, sexism, and transphobia are the root of all their problems. Americans are not enlightened enough to see that the Democrats are the party of compassion and tolerance, which is obviously why the only solution is to shoot us all in the neck.

When Amy Curtis wrote about this conversation this morning, I was a bit taken aback until I thought about it. If Winsome Sears were a Democrat running for governor and she had hit a tough patch in her campaign, we would hear the same complaint, only with a dash of “racism” thrown into the mix, right?

“Virginians are too intolerant to elect a black immigrant woman!” She would be the dream candidate for Dems, right? Except that she is a Republican, and therefore neither black nor female, since these are ideological and not biological categories in the Democrats’ mind. Black Republicans literally do not exist, because being “black” requires being a Democrat, just as being a “woman” is. Or, for that matter, being gay requires you to be a Democrat. 

Notice how not a one of those panelists even thought to question the idea that Spanberger isn’t exactly loved because of her gender. It obviously could have nothing to do with her being a personality-free radical running on a platform of “rage” and putting sex offenders into girls’ locker rooms.

Spanberger would be in deeper trouble if Winsome Earle-Sears were a better campaigner. While she is solid on the issues and well-loved among Republicans, she just hasn’t connected with the voters in the middle. That is partly due to the shutdown, of course. Virginia has a ton of federal workers, but it is partly due to her not being as smooth a talker as Glenn Youngkin, the current governor. Youngkin is a conservative who sounds like a moderate, while Sears is a conservative who sounds like a conservative.

Northern Virginians shudder at the idea of anybody proudly holding an AR-15, even if they had been a Marine. 

Spanberger is, on paper, more their speed. She’s softer, and the professional class likes that. If only she could answer questions and not be so AWFL.

If Spanberger loses—I sincerely hope she does—it will be despite the fact that she is a woman, not because of it. It is not her gender that is the problem, but her inability to separate herself from Jay Jones and her radical positions on social issues. 

Leftists can’t look that reality in the eye, so they grasp for their standard answer to all their troubles: Americans suck. If only we were more enlightened, the AWFLs would rule the world.
