MSNBC host Joe Scarborough criticized Democrats on Wednesday for what he called “intellectual laziness” and “groupthink,” arguing that these factors have contributed to the party’s struggles in recent elections.
Scarborough, co-host of the network’s Morning Joe, made the remarks during a discussion with Harvard professor Arthur C. Brooks.
The conversation centered around the lack of ideological diversity on college campuses and how it affects political engagement and performance.

Brooks, a former president of the American Enterprise Institute and a senior fellow at Harvard, addressed the imbalance in political perspectives in higher education.
“The truth of the matter is, we need more people that actually think differently than the masses,” Brooks said.
“We need more people than just sort of 20 to 1 liberals to conservatives, and we need to be on top of that and see this as an opportunity to get more ideological balance.”
Brooks clarified that the point wasn’t about creating an artificial balance.

“Not because we believe that you have to go 1 to 1 in fairness, none of that. We don’t need affirmative action for conservatives,” he said.
“But because when your liberal ideas on campus are not challenged, your education is mediocre and that’s just not right.”
Scarborough responded by referencing the confirmation hearings of Chief Justice John Roberts and how his ability to articulate legal positions impressed many at the time.
“I will say, and I said it after John Roberts’ confirmation process afterwards, everybody said, oh my God, Roberts, he was so great on his feet. How are conservatives, how did this happen?” Scarborough said.
He recalled a comment from conservative activist Grover Norquist about the experience of being a conservative student in predominantly liberal academic institutions.
“Grover Norquist said because if you were a conservative at Harvard Law School, anytime you opened your mouth, you better have thought through it about 20 different times because you were going to get crushed,” Scarborough noted.
He then turned the focus back to the Democratic Party’s challenges, particularly in political campaigning and public persuasion.
“Now we talk about why the left may be adrift and it lost. The other side of that is the intellectual laziness that occurs every time you open your mouth and they all agree with you and you’re part of groupthink,” he said.
“So you never have to defend your ideas.”
According to Scarborough, this lack of intellectual challenge leaves Democratic candidates unprepared when they face opposition outside of ideologically uniform spaces.
“So when you go out and run a campaign and you think everybody’s going to agree with you, it’s just the opposite,” he continued.
“You never had to be on your toes before, intellectually. And now you do. And you lose elections because of it.”
Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, has frequently criticized both political parties on his morning show.
However, his remarks Wednesday offered a candid assessment of the Democratic Party’s messaging and engagement strategy.
The comments come as Democrats assess recent electoral losses and face increasing scrutiny over their political messaging, particularly in battleground states and among working-class voters.
