Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), alongside seven key team members, provided an inside look into their department’s efforts to cut waste, reduce spending, and optimize federal operations during an exclusive interview with “Special Report” on Thursday.
Musk emphasized the department’s goal of reducing government spending by 15%, highlighting that the mission was achievable despite the challenges involved.
“We want to reduce spending by eliminating waste and fraud and reduce the spending by 15%, which seems really quite achievable,” Musk told “Special Report” executive editor Bret Baier.

“The government is not efficient, and there’s a lot of waste and fraud. So we feel confident that a 15% reduction can be done without affecting any of the critical government services.”

Joining Musk in the interview were DOGE team members Steve Davis, Joe Gebbia, Aram Moghaddassi, Brad Smith, Anthony Armstrong, Tom Krause, and Tyler Hassen.
The group provided a behind-the-scenes look at the department’s work across various federal agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service, the Interior Department, and the Social Security Administration.
Musk described the ongoing efforts as a revolutionary transformation within the federal government.
“This is a revolution. And I think it might be the biggest revolution in government since the original revolution. But at the end of the day, America’s going to be in much better shape,” he said. “It’s going to be a fantastic future.”

As of March 27, DOGE reports it has already saved taxpayers $130 billion, which equates to roughly $807.45 per taxpayer.
The department was established following an executive directive from President Donald Trump, who tasked the agency with streamlining government operations, eliminating inefficiencies, and cutting spending over the course of 18 months.
In its mission to meet the President’s goal, DOGE has canceled a range of programs and initiatives, including diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) projects, consulting contracts, leases for underused federal buildings, and duplicative agencies and programs.
One of the key topics discussed during the interview was DOGE’s work to overhaul federal spending on credit cards.
Steve Davis explained that there are approximately 4.6 million federal credit cards issued for just 2.3 to 2.4 million government employees. “This doesn’t make sense. So one of the things all of the teams have worked on is we’ve worked for the agencies and said, ‘Do you need all of these credit cards? Are they being used? Can you tell us physically where they are?’” Davis said.
Musk responded to the inefficiency of the system, adding, “Clearly there should not be more credit cards than there are people.”

Beyond credit card management, the DOGE team discussed efforts to address issues related to the federal workforce, government infrastructure, financial management, and computer systems, as well as Social Security.
However, the department has not been without its critics. Musk and the DOGE team have faced significant pushback from those concerned about the department’s extensive access to federal systems and its authority to cancel contracts and make cuts.
Critics argue that DOGE’s approach is too aggressive and could have negative consequences for various agencies.
In response, Musk defended the department’s approach, stating, “They may characterize it as shooting from the hip, but it is anything but that.”
He went on to clarify that DOGE’s cuts are made with careful consideration: “We measure twice, if not thrice, and cut once. Which is not to say that we don’t make mistakes. If we were to approach this with the standard of making no mistakes at all, that would be like saying someone in baseball has got to bat a thousand. That’s impossible. So when we do make mistakes, we correct them quickly and we move on.”

Musk also addressed the criticisms surrounding the legality of DOGE’s actions.
“When critics attack DOGE, they never attack any of the specifics,” Musk said.
“They’ll say what we’re doing is somehow unconstitutional or illegal or whatever. We’re like, ‘Well, which line of the cost savings do you disagree with?’ And they can’t point to any.”

The DOGE head emphasized that the department is committed to keeping Congress informed about its work, asserting, “The law does say that money needs to be spent correctly. It should not be spent fraudulently or wastefully. It’s not contrary to Congress to avoid waste and fraud. It is consistent with the law and consistent with Congress.”

While DOGE has garnered strong support from several Republican lawmakers, many Democrats remain critical of the department’s work and Musk’s leadership.
The debate over the department’s power and methods continues to unfold as DOGE pushes forward with its mission to revolutionize government efficiency.
