Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi received scrutiny from The Washington Post on Wednesday after claiming that fewer migrants entered the United States under Joe Biden’s administration than during President-elect Donald Trump’s first term.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Pelosi stated, “I don’t think we were clear enough by saying fewer people came in under President Joe Biden than came under Donald Trump.” She suggested that a lack of clarity in messaging was to blame for public perception issues regarding Biden’s immigration policies.
The Washington Post fact-checked Pelosi’s statement, ultimately refuting her claim and awarding it a rating of “Four Pinocchios,” their highest level for misleading information.

The fact-check highlighted that “at least four times as many migrants entered the United States under Biden than under Trump.”
An aide later clarified to the outlet that Pelosi was referring to deportation figures rather than overall border crossings.
The aide cited a report from Reuters, which indicated that Biden’s administration was on track to surpass the annual deportation numbers of any single year under Trump.
However, The Washington Post noted that the data does not support Pelosi’s comparison, adding that Biden’s overall deportations throughout his term are still projected to fall short of Trump’s total.
“It showed that in fiscal year 2024, Biden was on pace to exceed the number of deportations of any single year under Trump,” the Post’s fact-check read. “But the article did not say that deportations under Biden would be higher than they were under Trump — far from it. Through four years, Biden almost certainly will have fewer deportations than Trump, according to the Reuters count.”
The Washington Post went on to say that Pelosi’s claim “veers even more off course” upon closer analysis of the figures, highlighting the discrepancy between her statement and the available data.
During the same interview with The New York Times, Pelosi also commented on the recent election outcome, suggesting that Kamala Harris might have had a stronger chance of winning if Joe Biden had exited the race earlier. “Had the president gotten out sooner, there may have been other candidates in the race. Kamala, I think, still would have won, but she may have been stronger, having taken her case to the public sooner,” Pelosi remarked.
Before the election: We had an open process. We had a Democrat primary. Kamala is such a strong candidate, she won it.
After the election: Kamala was a weak candidate because we didn’t have a Democrat primary.

Following Pelosi’s comments, MSNBC host Symone Sanders Townsend criticized her role in Biden’s public departure from the race.
On her program, Townsend questioned Pelosi’s involvement and her strategic decisions during the election cycle, stating, “Nancy Pelosi, everybody talks about how the speaker emerita, you know, she’s so strategic, she can count, she did all of that when she was the speaker in Congress, but my question is: Where is your calculator now?” Townsend added, “She helped orchestrate the very public demise of the president.”
The fact-check from The Washington Post and Townsend’s remarks highlight the growing scrutiny within the Democratic Party regarding key strategic decisions and messaging as they assess the recent election results and prepare for the incoming Trump administration.
