In the current political climate, it’s easy to forget just how far some career politicians have drifted from the positions they once held.
No better example of this exists than former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her complete reversal on trade with China.
While Pelosi now criticizes President Donald Trump’s tough tariff policies, in 1996 she was sounding the alarm about the very same trade imbalance he’s trying to fix today.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane.
In 1996, Nancy Pelosi stood on the House floor and passionately argued against the unfair trade relationship between the United States and China.
“I’d like to call the attention of our colleagues to this chart on the status quo that the business community is asking each and every one of you, to each and every one of us to endorse today. Right now we have a 34 billion dollar trade deficit with China… this figure has increased 1,000% from three and a half billion then to about $34 billion now,” she warned.
Her outrage was clear. She went on to highlight the disparity in tariffs, calling out how America was being played.

“The average US MFN tariff on Chinese goods coming into the United States is 2%, whereas the average Chinese MFN tariff on U.S. goods going into China is 35%. Is that reciprocal?” she asked rhetorically.
Yet today, Pelosi criticizes President Trump’s America First trade policies—the very same approach she once advocated.
President Trump has been consistent and unflinching in his stance: America will no longer be taken advantage of by foreign governments, especially the Chinese Communist Party.
His administration imposed tariffs not to start a trade war, but to finally fight back in one that has been waged against the U.S. for decades—silently, unfairly, and with devastating impact on American workers.
Pelosi once acknowledged this reality.
“China only allows certain industries into China… only 2% of U.S. exports are allowed into China. On the other hand, the U.S. allows China to flood our markets… and it’s limitless because we have not placed any restriction,” she said.
The hypocrisy couldn’t be more glaring. Pelosi now claims to care about American jobs, yet she has turned her back on the very economic nationalism she once championed.
Trump, by contrast, has remained true to the American worker. Under his leadership, the U.S. renegotiated trade deals, brought jobs back from overseas, and stood up to Beijing’s cheating.
He imposed tariffs not out of spite, but out of necessity—because for too long, globalist politicians, including Pelosi, allowed China to rig the game.
Pelosi’s own words tell the truth: “This is the biggest and cruelest hoax of all… China benefits with at least 10 million jobs from U.S.-China trade… whereas our imports from China support a mil 10 million jobs at least.”
She was right—back then. Today, she chooses to attack Trump for trying to reverse that trend, even though she once acknowledged the massive job losses caused by these lopsided trade deals.
And let’s not forget this gem: “Our colleagues on the other side of this issue will say the trade with China—exports to China have increased three times in the last 10 years. They have. But they fail to mention that imports from China have increased 11 times, thereby leading to this huge trade deficit.”
That’s exactly the case Trump has made again and again: our politicians have sold out Main Street to benefit Wall Street and the Chinese Communist Party.
Pelosi used to see the truth clearly. But somewhere along the way, perhaps lost in the political swamp of Washington, she abandoned that clarity—and the working class along with it.
So when Pelosi now criticizes Trump’s tariffs, remember—she once stood on the floor of Congress and said exactly what Trump is saying now.
The difference?
Trump meant it.
He’s fighting to put American jobs and industries first. Pelosi, on the other hand, flip-flopped when it was politically convenient.
At the end of the day, Trump is delivering where Pelosi only talked.
And in 2024 and beyond, Americans will remember who stood up to China, and who sold us out.
