A second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was thwarted by Secret Service agents on Sunday as Trump played a round of golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
This attempt comes just two months after a similar incident occurred during a rally in Pennsylvania, raising concerns about increasing threats against the former president.
The suspect, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was armed with an AK-47 rifle and was spotted by Secret Service agents between 300 to 500 yards from Trump.

Routh allegedly shoved the rifle’s muzzle through a chain-link fence surrounding the golf course, preparing to open fire. Secret Service agents quickly fired at Routh, causing him to flee the scene.
He left behind the rifle, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera, which authorities believe he planned to use to record the attack.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw confirmed that Routh was later apprehended on Interstate 95 in Martin County after a witness captured a photo of his vehicle.
Routh, a registered Democrat from Hawaii, was found with additional items believed to be connected to the attack. This marks the second assassination attempt on Trump in just over two months, following a July incident in which a gunman opened fire at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Sunday’s attempt on Trump’s life came just hours after inflammatory remarks made by several public figures on MSNBC, where they accused Trump of inciting domestic terrorism.
One guest on The Saturday Show, Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis, drew comparisons between Trump and notorious dictators, likening him to Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. “Let’s not pretend that Donald Trump isn’t exactly like Mussolini, exactly like Hitler, he is that guy,” Lewis said.

Texas Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett also appeared on MSNBC over the weekend, where she suggested that Trump and his supporters represent a domestic terror threat.
Speaking with former Biden press secretary Jen Psaki on Inside, Crockett criticized Trump for allegedly stoking violence. “Right now, I feel like MAGA, in general, is a threat to us domestically,” Crockett stated. She went on to accuse Trump of amplifying lies that have led to bomb threats and acts of violence across the country.

While Routh’s motive is still under investigation, early reports indicate that he has a history of anti-Trump rhetoric.
According to media reports, Routh was obsessed with the war in Ukraine and had made posts critical of Trump on social media, accusing him of being a threat to democracy.
Routh’s social media presence has drawn attention to his political affiliations, including his past support for the Democratic Party and his fixation on international conflicts.
MSNBC’s coverage of the assassination attempt has raised eyebrows, with some questioning the network’s tone in the wake of two recent attempts on Trump’s life.
Host Alex Witt, following Sunday’s incident, posed the question of whether Trump and his campaign should “tone down their rhetoric.”
Rather than addressing the toxic political environment created by years of hostile media coverage, Witt and her guest, Elise Jordan, suggested that Trump’s campaign might be to blame for escalating tensions.
Jordan expressed her hope that Trump would use the moment for unity but voiced skepticism, saying, “I fear he won’t.”

Many have criticized the media’s role in fanning the flames of political division.
Trump and his supporters have long pointed to networks like MSNBC (owned by NBCUniversal) for their unrelenting attacks on the former president, claiming that their rhetoric has contributed to the heightened political climate.

Sunday’s assassination attempt has further highlighted the dangerous implications of inflamed rhetoric in the media.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis responded to the attack by announcing that the state would conduct its own investigation into how Routh was able to get so close to Trump. “The people deserve the truth about the would-be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee,” DeSantis posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

This latest assassination attempt has added to concerns over Trump’s security as he continues his bid for the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential election.
Despite increased security measures following the July incident in Pennsylvania, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw acknowledged that Trump’s protection remains lighter than it would be if he were still a sitting president.
However, Bradshaw commended the Secret Service for their swift response, stating, “The Secret Service did exactly what they should have done.”
As investigations continue, questions remain about how Routh knew Trump would be at the golf course at that time.
Former FBI assistant director Chris Swecker told Newsweek that law enforcement would be examining whether Routh had inside information on Trump’s schedule, conducted surveillance, or simply got lucky. “The last answer is scary and has implications that another person was involved,” Swecker said.
With two assassination attempts in such a short time, concerns over political violence and threats to Trump’s safety are likely to grow as the 2024 election approaches.
