Internal Department of Homeland Security memos obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit reveal that both DHS and the FBI had long-standing concerns about Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The documents were released to watchdog group Judicial Watch and relate to Walz’s selection by Kamala Harris as her running mate in the 2024 presidential election.
The newly released communications, shared with Just the News, include messages from DHS officials in an internal chat group titled “NST NFT Bi-Weekly Sync.”

One message, dated August 7, 2024—the day after Walz was announced as Harris’s vice-presidential pick—reads: “China is happy,” and includes a link to a BBC article covering positive reactions from Chinese state media and online users.
Another message in the same thread suggested that the FBI be included in discussions, citing its counterintelligence mission.
“With FBI mission in the CI field I believe they need to get included,” the unnamed DHS employee wrote.
The group chat, composed of federal officials monitoring “subnational engagement” between China and U.S. state-level officials, documented concern over Walz’s past interactions with Chinese government entities.

The memos represent some of the most direct evidence to date that Walz’s selection raised red flags inside the federal government.
According to Judicial Watch, the Biden-era DHS initially resisted efforts to release these records until DHS Secretary Kristi Noem complied with the court-ordered production following the lawsuit.
“This is every bit as important as the Russiagate disclosures,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.
“The Biden gang obviously covered this all up to try to help rig the election.”

The House Oversight Committee, led by Chairman James Comer (R-KY), previously launched an investigation into Walz’s ties to China after receiving whistleblower testimony that described “serious concern” over Walz’s multiple visits to China and his interactions with Chinese Communist Party officials dating back decades.
“The Committee’s investigation of the CCP – begun long before Governor Walz was elevated to be the vice-presidential candidate for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris – seeks to understand the extent of the CCP’s infiltration and influence campaign and to identify legislative reforms to combat CCP political warfare,” Comer wrote in a subpoena cover letter to DHS in September 2024.
One message in the DHS chat logs, previously reported by Just the News, said: “Waltz [sic] got the VP. You all have no idea how this feeds into what the PRC has been doing here with him and local gov. It’s seriously a line of intel. Target someone who is perceived they can get to DC.”
Other messages in the 47-page production confirmed FBI involvement.
One employee wrote, “Good to know and yes there involvement with HSI and FBI on things here.”
The Oversight Committee also sought information on whether Walz had ever received counterintelligence warnings from the FBI regarding his engagement with Chinese-linked entities.
The committee’s concerns were amplified by Walz’s history, including dozens of visits to China beginning in the 1990s and Chinese-funded student trips he organized as a high school teacher in Nebraska.
According to the Daily Caller and Oversight Committee documentation, Walz welcomed CCP officials into his classroom and spoke positively about China’s communist system.
In a 1990s interview with the Alliance Times-Herald, Walz said of China: “It means that everyone is the same and everyone shares.
The doctor and the construction worker make the same. The Chinese government and the place they work for provide housing and 14 kg – or about 30 pounds – of rice per month. They get food and housing.”
More recently, Walz expressed support for China’s role in global diplomacy. During a foreign policy panel with Neera Tanden at the Center for American Progress earlier this year, Walz commented on China’s potential role in peace negotiations between Iran and Israel, stating, “It might be the Chinese,” when asked who holds the moral authority to negotiate a peace deal.
