Ongoing search and rescue operations continue across the Texas Hill Country after a catastrophic flood wave swept down the Guadalupe River, killing at least 82 people and leaving dozens more unaccounted for.

Officials say the death toll is expected to rise as emergency crews expand their recovery efforts in several counties.

The deadly flooding began days ago when heavy rainfall caused the Guadalupe River to surge more than 20 feet, unleashing a torrent that destroyed homes, camps, and infrastructure along its path.

Local and state agencies remain on high alert as additional rainfall is forecast to impact the region through Tuesday.

Among the hardest-hit areas is Kerr County, where 68 of the confirmed fatalities have been reported.

Of those, at least 28 were children who had been attending Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp in Hunt. Many of the victims were asleep when the flood struck the campgrounds overnight.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott surveyed the destruction at Camp Mystic and spoke about the tragedy.

“It was nothing short of horrific to see what those young children went through,” Abbott said.

Fatalities have been confirmed in six counties: Kerr, Burnet, Travis, Kendall, Williamson, and Tom Green.

With dozens still missing, authorities have requested that family members of those unaccounted for submit DNA samples to assist in the identification process.

Samples are being flown to laboratories for expedited testing.

The Texas Military Department reported that more than 500 people have been rescued so far, with a combination of air and ground operations.

According to the department, 361 rescues were conducted by air using Black Hawk helicopters, while 159 people were saved by ground crews.

Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring spoke about the response efforts, referencing a quote by Fred Rogers: “Look for the helpers.”

He added, “In Kerrville, those helpers are the city staff, county personnel, state agencies, and federal agencies. The entire Kerrville City Council is on site today. We’re doing everything we can.”

“Our goal is to rescue those in peril and find those who are lost,” Herring said.

In response to the disaster, Governor Abbott issued a formal disaster declaration for 15 counties impacted by the flash flooding.

“This is a time when we, as a state, need God more than ever,” Abbott said.

“The one thing I hear the most are the prayers that are being sent for those in harm’s way. There is an extraordinary collaboration to make sure that we address everybody’s concerns as quickly as possible.”

The disaster declaration gives affected counties access to state resources and emergency personnel.

“It allows communities access to every tool, strategy, and personnel that the State of Texas can provide to them, which will be limitless,” Abbott stated.

President Donald Trump signed a major disaster declaration for Kerr County to ensure that first responders have immediate access to federal support and resources.

The FOX Forecast Center warned that more heavy rain is expected across south-central Texas through at least Tuesday.

Flood Watches have been issued, and local officials remain concerned about the threat of further flash flooding as well as prolonged river and lake flooding in the days ahead.

The Guadalupe River, which caused much of the devastation upstream in Hunt, continues to send floodwaters downstream.

The river in Bloomington, more than 200 miles away, is not expected to reach minor flood stage until Wednesday.

As the state braces for more rain and continues recovery operations, hundreds of families remain displaced or awaiting news about missing loved ones.

Emergency crews are urging residents to remain cautious and avoid low-lying areas as conditions remain unstable.
