Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faced criticism from The New York Times following remarks he made during a press briefing on Saturday night about the United States’ precision airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

The strikes, part of Operation Midnight Hammer, targeted key nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan using B-2 stealth bombers.

Speaking alongside Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine, Hegseth described the scope and precision of the military operation, emphasizing the capability of U.S. forces to conduct undetected long-range missions.

“Iran is calculating the reality that planes flew from the middle of America in MISSOURI over night, completely undetected, over 3 of their most highly sensitive sites. And we were able to destroy nuclear capabilities,” Hegseth said.

During his remarks, Hegseth added, “Our boys in those bombers are on their way home right now,” a line that drew criticism from The New York Times.

🚨 Just WOW…

Times contributor John Ismay, a former Navy officer and current reporter on military affairs, took issue with Hegseth’s phrasing, accusing him of sexism for referring to the bomber crews as “our boys.”

In a live blog covering the press conference, Ismay wrote, “In the briefing, Hegseth referred to B-2 bombers as ‘our boys on those bombers,’ yet both men and women have trained to fly them.”

🚨 LMAO…!

Pete Hegseth said “our boys” in B2s are on their way home from Iran.

The response sparked widespread mockery on social media, with critics accusing The New York Times of prioritizing language policing over the significance of the military operation itself.

Supporters of Hegseth noted that the phrase “our boys” has long been used colloquially to refer to service members and was not intended to exclude female personnel.

The controversy comes amid renewed efforts by some Democratic lawmakers to challenge President Trump’s authority to launch military strikes without congressional approval.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) called for impeachment proceedings in a post on X following the strike.

“The President’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote.

“He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations. It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.”

Her remarks echoed earlier statements from Democrats following U.S. military actions, but were quickly met with criticism from users who pointed out inconsistencies.

“You didn’t impeach Biden for his Middle East unconstitutional bombings,” one user posted. “So STFU.”

Not all Democrats opposed the operation. Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) publicly praised the president’s decision, calling the strike a necessary step in preventing Iran from advancing its nuclear capabilities.

“As I’ve long maintained, this was the correct move by [President Trump],” Fetterman said.

“Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot have nuclear capabilities. I’m grateful for and salute the finest military in the world.”

The Pentagon confirmed that the mission involved more than 125 U.S. aircraft, including seven B-2 bombers, and employed 14 Massive Ordnance Penetrators to strike fortified targets.

The Fordow nuclear site, built deep into a mountain, was reportedly hit with multiple precision-guided munitions.

Officials have stated that the mission was intended to degrade Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and deter further proliferation activity.
