Authorities in California say they were not notified for two days about a fatal golf cart incident involving NFL Hall of Famer John Elway.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office confirmed this week it has opened an investigation into the death of Elway’s longtime friend and agent, Jeffrey Sperbeck, as reported by Fox News.
According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, officials received information on Monday regarding an incident that occurred Saturday evening at The Madison Club in La Quinta.

TMZ reported that Elway was driving a golf cart following a Stagecoach music festival after-party when Sperbeck, 62, fell off the back of the vehicle. Elway, 63, reportedly placed the initial 911 call.
Sperbeck was transported to a local hospital by first responders with serious injuries and was initially listed in critical condition. He died three days later, on Wednesday, at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.

The Riverside County Fire Department, working alongside Cal Fire, responded to the incident at approximately 6:50 p.m. on Saturday.
A Cal Fire spokesperson told Fox News Digital that the incident was categorized as a medical call, and the sheriff’s office was not immediately requested to respond.
Public records show Elway owns property about 10 minutes from the location of the incident. The Madison Club and representatives for Elway have not provided public comment as of Thursday.
The sheriff’s office did not explain why it was not informed of the incident until Monday but confirmed that it is now conducting a formal investigation.

“The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Sperbeck and will take appropriate action based on the outcome,” the statement read.
Elway issued a public statement following the death of his friend:
“I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck. There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.”
Sperbeck’s family also issued a statement, saying:
“We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our beloved Jeff Sperbeck. He was a wonderful father, husband, brother, son and friend to many and will be profoundly missed by all.”
Sperbeck began working with Elway in 1990 and went on to represent numerous NFL players, including Hall of Famers Ronnie Lott and Jim Plunkett.
