Two 9-year-old twin sisters from Michigan have been recognized for their life-saving actions after pulling a young girl from the bottom of a swimming pool in late June, as reported by The New York Post.

Ava and Addison Apostolopoulos were swimming at their grandmother’s apartment complex pool outside Detroit when they spotted a 4-year-old girl lying motionless underwater.

The sisters had gone to the pool expecting a routine afternoon swim. “We were gonna swim in the pool, jump in the pool and have fun,” Ava told ABC 7.

But what started as a fun summer day turned serious when the twins noticed the child not moving at the bottom of the pool. “She was not moving,” Ava said.

Acting quickly, one of the girls ran to grab goggles to improve visibility while the other dove into the water to reach the child.

After pulling the young girl to the surface, the sisters called for help. Cody Boyette, a pool worker on duty, responded immediately and began administering CPR.

Their grandmother dialed 911 as emergency services were called to the scene. Thanks to their swift response, the child was revived and transported to a nearby hospital. She survived the incident and is now recovering.

The city of Wixom formally honored Ava and Addison, along with Boyette, during an award ceremony last week. The Wixom Police Department presented all three with the Civilian Citation Award for their actions.

Wixom Chief of Police Phil Langmeyer praised the trio, stating, “I have no doubt in my mind that these three people saved a young child’s life.”

The girls’ father, Jason Apostolopoulos, said he was proud of how his daughters handled the emergency. “We’re just all about helping, we’re aware of our surroundings and taught them the same thing: if you see something, do something,” he said.

Ava expressed her relief that the child survived. “I am very happy she’s alive now, and I hope she’s having a good time. And I’m happy,” she said.
