During an appearance on The Ingraham Angle on Fox News, Noem was asked whether the administration would impose consequences on local officials who attempt to defy federal authority on immigration enforcement.
“Nobody’s above the law. Of course, we will,” Noem responded.
“But that’s up to President Trump. President Trump gives us a direction. I don’t sit here and make up a decision on what I do. I follow the law.”
Noem emphasized that under the Trump administration, all individuals—regardless of local policies—will be held accountable under federal law.
“We treat everybody the same in this country now that we have President Trump in the White House, and he’s going to give us direction on how we’re going to go after these individuals,” she added.
Noem also spoke about the impact of sanctuary city laws, stating that local policies shielding illegal immigrants from deportation have created serious challenges for federal law enforcement.
“The reality is, these sanctuary cities, their laws have caused us problems. They are limiting some of our tools that we want in our toolbox, but we’re going to continue to go in and use our operations and then show in other cities how it’s working and tell our story to the American people,” Noem said.
She stressed the importance of transparency, urging communities to pay closer attention to how their local leaders handle immigration policy.
“The people in their community need to hear how their mayors, their elected officials, are protecting the criminals,” Noem said.
Noem was confirmed as DHS secretary last week and is now responsible for implementing President Donald Trump’s executive orders on border security and immigration enforcement.
Her department oversees operations at agencies including Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Secret Service, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The Trump administration has already begun ramping up deportation efforts, rescinding Biden-era protections for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan nationals.
According to a DHS memo obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation, the department revoked an 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) granted to approximately 600,000 Venezuelan nationals earlier in January.
The decision is part of the administration’s broader effort to enforce federal immigration laws and roll back policies implemented under President Joe Biden.
As the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown on illegal immigration, Noem made it clear that sanctuary cities will not be exempt from enforcement actions and that local officials obstructing federal law will be held accountable.
