Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, said the SAVE America Act now has 50 Senate supporters and that there are “enough votes to pass a motion to proceed” on the House-passed bill.
The House of Representatives approved the legislation in a 218–213 vote. The measure seeks to keep non-citizens from voting in federal elections in the United States.
“We’ve got 49 Senate sponsors of the SAVE America Act and at least one more—Senator Collins—who supports it, and that takes us to 50!” Lee wrote in a post on X.

Lee indicated that advancing the bill would still require additional procedural steps. In a separate post on X, he said that while “there are no guarantees,” the “only shot” is to use the Talking Filibuster.
“I’m getting a lot of questions, ‘What’s next?’ now that we’ve got enough votes to get past a motion to proceed to the House-passed version of the SAVE America Act,” Lee said in a video.
“We’ve got to put all of our efforts, i.e., encourage everyone who will listen to you. The Senate needs to invoke the Talking Filibuster, to enforce the Talking Filibuster.”
Lee added, “if Senators want to debate this, if they want to Filibuster it, make them work for it.”
The SAVE America Act is an updated version of the original Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which passed the House in April last year but was not taken up in the Senate.
According to reporting from Breitbart News’s Alana Mastrangelo, the House passed the updated bill 218 to 213. Only one House Democrat, Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, voted in favor of the election integrity initiative. All other House Democrats voted against it.
The new version of the legislation would require photo identification to vote in federal elections.
It also seeks to establish a federal proof of citizenship requirement in the voter registration process and would mandate that states maintain voter rolls purged of ineligible individuals.
Supporters of the measure have argued that it is aimed at safeguarding election integrity by ensuring that only eligible citizens participate in federal elections.
The bill’s opponents have raised concerns about its impact, but the House ultimately approved it along party lines with Cuellar as the sole Democratic vote in favor.
President Donald Trump addressed voter identification in posts on Truth Social following the House vote.
He compared the absence of voter ID requirements to other policy issues and called for action before the next federal election cycle.
“We cannot let the Democrats get away with NO VOTER I.D. any longer,” Trump wrote.
“These are horrible, disingenuous CHEATERS. They have all sorts of reasons why it shouldn’t be passed, and then boldly laugh in the backrooms after their ridiculous presentations. If it weren’t such a serious matter, it would be considered a TOTAL JOKE! No Voter I.D. is even crazier, and more ridiculous, than Men playing in Women’s Sports, Open Borders, or Transgender for Everyone.”
In a separate post, Trump stated that there would “be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!”
With 50 senators publicly supporting the measure, Lee said the chamber has sufficient votes to move forward on the motion to proceed.
He has encouraged colleagues and supporters to focus on procedural tactics, including invoking the Talking Filibuster, as the bill advances in the Senate.
