President Donald Trump’s crackdown on Washington, D.C. crime has led to a significant improvement in public safety, according to a review of public data from the Metropolitan Police Department.
Trump began cleaning up D.C. on Aug. 7 with the creation of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force. A few days later on Aug. 11, the president federalized the D.C. police and deployed the National Guard.
The Daily Caller compared crime statistics from a two week period of Trump’s takeover, Aug. 11 – Aug. 25, to the same period in 2023 and 2024.
Total crime in that two week period has dropped precipitously, according to data from the Metropolitan Police Department. Crime was 21% lower when compared to 2024 and 33% lower when compared to 2023.
There have also been major decreases in total violent crime — 52% lower than 2024 and 71% lower than 2023 — and a myriad of other categories, including homicides, carjackings, robberies, auto theft, and all property crime.
Critics of Trump’s federal action in D.C. noted that crime was already falling in D.C., but comparisons of statistics from Aug. 11 – Aug. 25 between 2023 to 2024 and the same two weeks between 2024 and 2025 show that the drop in most categories has been larger since Trump’s takeover.
Carjackings, for example, fell 35% in two week period between 2023 and 2024 but then dropped 96% in 2025. Robberies fell 46% between 2023 and 2024 and 68% in 2025. Homicides similarly dropped by 40% between 2023 and 2024 and then 67% in 2025.

From Aug. 11, 2024 to Aug. 25, 2024, there were 26 carjackings — and 40 during the same time period in 2023 — the data shows. In the two weeks since Trump’s D.C. crackdown, there has been one carjacking.
There have been 28 robberies during Trump’s D.C. takeover, the data shows. There were 88 in the same time period in 2024 and 163 in 2023.
The Metropolitan Police Department logged 67 violent crimes since Aug. 11, which compares to 139 during the same time period in 2024 and 235 in 2023. (Two crimes were excluded from the most recent data because they occurred outside the timeframe but were reported after Aug. 11.)
There have been two homicides from Aug. 11 to Aug. 25 (data shows there were three homicides but one occurred outside of the time frame and was reported after Aug. 11.) Over the same period in 2024, there were six homicides and ten in the same time frame in 2023, the data shows.

In the assault with dangerous weapons category, the decrease from 2023 to 2024 was greater than the decrease from 2024 to Trump’s 2025 takeover, though the numbers still continued to drop.
Assaults with dangerous weapons have fallen 20% over the two week period from 2024 to 2025, the data shows. There was a decrease of 27% from 2023 to 2024 in the assaults with dangerous weapons category.
The same can be said of theft, which has decreased by 5% from 2024 to Trump’s takeover in 2025. There was a 15% drop in the same two week period from 2023 to 2024.

“We know that when carjackings go down, when the use of guns goes down, when homicide or robbery go down, neighborhoods feel safer and are safer,” she said. “So this surge has been important to us for that reason.”
The president told reporters last week that he is likely going to tackle crime in other cities, including in Chicago.
“Chicago is a mess. You have an incompetent mayor, grossly incompetent, and we’ll straighten that one out probably next, that will be our next one after this, and it won’t even be tough. And the people in Chicago, Mr. Vice President, are screaming for us to come,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Friday.
“So I think Chicago will be our next and then we’ll help with New York,” Trump said. “I think a lot of … these people that are, you see on television … they’ll say bad things about me, and then they’ll say, ‘thank God he’s here,’ because half of them got mugged, and they don’t want to get mugged again.”
