Yesterday I wrote about the remarkable story of Hamas going full Pallywood as it pretended to recover the body of an Israeli hostage.
The remains were delivered to Israel and identified a few hours later as belonging to a deceased hostage named Ofir Tzarfati. His body had been returned to Israel two years earlier, meaning these remains weren’t new and did not belong to one of the 13 hostages kidnapped on 10/7 whose bodies have not yet been returned to Israel in keeping with the ceasefire agreement.
Hamas has claimed it doesn’t know where those bodies are (they could be buried anywhere under rubble) but Israel and the US have both said Hamas knows exactly where at least most of the bodies are.
But the real shock came a few hours later when the IDF released drone footage showing exactly how the remains of Ofir Tzarfati were “discovered.” Three Hamas members took the remains, wrapped in a sheet, and buried them only to have the same men “discover” the body moments later as Red Cross observers came over to where they were doing. The whole thing was staged, a gimmick designed to make it look like Hamas was making progress. In fact, it revealed they had been lying all along.
But even when caught red-handed, Hamas denied the video and claimed they were being set up somehow.
The Israeli military released drone footage that it said showed Hamas operatives burying a bag with remains in the ground so that the International Committee of the Red Cross could find them. Netanyahu called the move a violation of the U.S.-negotiated ceasefire.
Hamas said in a statement that Israel’s allegations were “baseless and aimed at misleading public opinion.” It said, “The occupation is seeking to fabricate false pretexts in preparation for taking new aggressive steps against our people, in blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement.”
The NY Times decided to take it’s own look at the video and the evidence and in a story published today they conclude that everything Israel said about the incident is true.
In the video, three men, their faces covered, can be seen carrying what appears to be a white body bag out of a damaged building and placing it in what satellite images analyzed by the Times confirm was a freshly dug pit.
The three men then use shovels to bury the bag with dirt and place large rocks over it, covering it entirely, as a fourth man, dressed in black, looks on from the edge of the pit…
The Times confirmed the video was filmed in the Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza City, and satellite imagery confirmed that dirt was moved from the area between Monday and Tuesday. The Israeli military said the video was recorded on Monday.
The Red Cross denied knowing the whole thing was staged.
The Red Cross said its staff was unaware that a body had been moved before their arrival.
“Our team only observed what appeared to be the recovery of remains without prior knowledge of the circumstances leading up to it,” the statement added. “It is unacceptable that a fake recovery was staged.”
So there you have it. The Times geo-located the place where this happened. They confirmed the hole where the body was placed was brand new and apparently custom made for this purpose. They confirmed that the Red Cross who were on site had no idea they were being tricked. In short, everything Israel said was true and Hamas’ denial is not credible in the least.
If they hadn’t been caught, Hamas would have claimed this handover showed their good faith effort to comply with the agreement. Instead, we have incontrovertible proof they are lying about the remains of Israel hostages and playing a game for observers.
