Many Democrats appear to share President-elect Donald Trump’s positions involving transgender issues, puberty blockers for minors and illegal immigration, in contrast to otherwise negative reactions to his upcoming second term in the White House, a new poll from The New York Times and Ipsos shows.
Despite 86% of the Democrat and Democrat-leaning respondents expressing pessimism (20%) and worry (66%) about Trump’s return, 67% of them oppose allowing transgender athletes into women’s sports, the poll shows. Barring transgender athletes from women’s sports also drew the support of 64% of Independents and 94% of Republican and Republican-leaning respondents.
Nearly half (49%) of those polled believed society had become too accommodating toward transgender people. 62% of Democrat and Democrat-leaning respondents said society had gone either far enough (39%) or too far (23%) in accommodating transgender people. 77% of Republican and Republican-leaning respondents said society had gone too far on the issue. More than half (54%) of Democrat and Democrat-leaning respondents said minors must not have access to puberty blockers. Nine out of every 10 Republican and Republican-leaning respondents and about six out of every 10 Independents (61%) polled supported the position.

Nearly as many Democrat and Democrat-leaning respondents (77%) as Republican and Republican-leaning respondents (79%) knew about Trump’s plans regarding illegal immigration. 46% of the Independents participating in the poll said they were aware.
83% of Democrat and Democrat-leaning respondents overall said illegal immigrants with criminal records should be deported; 94% of Republicans and 64% of Independents agreed. 49% of Democrat and Democrat-leaning respondents “strongly support” the deportation of such illegal immigrants. 55% of Democrat and Democrat-leaning respondents polled, however, opposed overall any plan to deport immigrants who illegally entered the U.S. during President Joe Biden’s term, compared to 87% of Republican and Republican-leaning respondents who supported such plans.
Criminality was the deciding factor in whether all illegal immigrants without exception should be deported, for the Democrat and Democrat-leaning respondents polled. Only 33% thought all illegal immigrants should be deported, while Republican and Republican-leaning respondents overwhelmingly (83%) wanted to see all illegal immigrants deported.

The poll also found overall support for ending birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants was fairly low (41%). Some 69% of Democrat and Democrat-leaning respondents opposed such a move, while 58% of Republican and Republican-leaning respondents and 14% of Independents supported it.
Increasing tariffs on China and Mexico also proved divisive. Only 21% of Democrat and Democrat-leaning respondents and 24% of Independents supported it; 75% of Republicans and Republican-leaning respondents opposed it.
Ending Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (D.E.I.) efforts in schools, universities and government agencies also yielded partyline data. Only 26% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning respondents and 23% of Independents wanted the curtains to fall on D.E.I. — something 74% of Republican and Republican-leaning respondents would like to see happen, the poll shows.
