Democratic New York City Councilman Robert Holden called on the Trump administration Tuesday to pursue criminal charges against Democratic officials who obstruct Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.
Speaking during a segment on Newsmax with host Rob Schmitt, Holden accused members of his own party of actively working against law enforcement efforts to remove criminal illegal immigrants.
“They’re actually plotting against Trump. They started from day one,” Holden said.
“The state level, the far left, the socialists, are drafting legislation as we speak to try to put up more obstacles and prevent ICE from doing their job.”

As ICE intensifies efforts to detain undocumented immigrants with criminal records, Holden voiced his support for the crackdown and criticized fellow Democrats for opposing immigration enforcement.
He suggested that obstructing ICE’s mission should come with legal consequences.
“I hope President Trump and certainly Tom Homan come up with actual felonies and charge these elected officials. My party, I want my country back,” Holden stated.
“When you’re going to put up obstacles to prevent ICE from taking criminals off our streets, you shouldn’t be in office. You shouldn’t be a member of leadership in New York City, New York State, or anywhere else in our country.”
Holden noted that within the New York City Council, few Democrats openly support stronger enforcement policies.
“The people with common sense in this country and many of the people with common sense are Democrats, but they have to speak out like I’m doing. Generally, I’m the only one. There’s one or two of us in the city council out of 51 members that really—Democrats—that speak out and say, you know what, we want safer streets. We want a safer city. We don’t want criminals running around. We don’t need to import more criminals here in New York City—we have enough. So let’s get this straight, and let’s get this right,” Holden said.
New York City has struggled to manage a surge of illegal migrants, which has led to billions of taxpayer dollars being spent on food, shelter, and other public services.
In response, Democratic Mayor Eric Adams ordered a 5% budget cut across all city agencies in September 2023.
The rise in migrant crime has further fueled concerns.
Among the recent high-profile cases is a Guatemalan national accused of burning a woman alive on the subway, a Venezuelan migrant convicted of murdering Georgia nursing student Laken Riley after being relocated from New York City, and a Nicaraguan man charged with raping a woman at knifepoint after a previous arrest for sexual assault.
As the Trump administration ramps up immigration enforcement, it has removed restrictions on ICE activities in sensitive locations such as schools and hospitals.
The administration has also expanded expedited removal policies, allowing deportation officers to bypass court proceedings for illegal migrants nationwide.
Following an executive order declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, the administration has deployed military personnel and aircraft to accelerate deportations.
Holden’s comments reflect growing frustration over policies that critics argue have hindered law enforcement’s ability to address the crisis.
