New York State Senator Jessica Ramos, a Democratic candidate for New York City mayor, is seeking to manage the city’s $112 billion budget while reportedly defaulting on nearly $80,000 in student loans, according to court records reviewed by The Post.

Filings from Queens state supreme court in 2019 show that Ramos defaulted on two separate loans: one for $35,757.21 and another for $42,550.25. The combined debt of $78,307.46 remains unpaid as of this year.

When contacted by The Post, Ramos acknowledged her outstanding debt, stating:

“I’m part of the generation that is saddled with student debt.”

Her mother, Melfy Londono, was also named as a co-plaintiff in the default judgments filed in 2019, one year after Ramos began serving in the state Senate.

In both cases, lawyers from the firm Forster & Garbus, representing the lender, indicated in court documents that “no part of said sum has been paid although duly demanded.”

The financial issue has raised concerns among Democrats, including Frank Seddio, the former Brooklyn Democratic Party leader and current supporter of mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo.

“It hurts her candidacy,” Seddio said, adding:

“She can’t manage her own debt. She’s going to manage the city’s?”

Financial disclosures show that Ramos’ campaign has raised $232,292 in private donations and spent $231,253. She has not yet qualified for public matching funds ahead of the June 24 Democratic primary.

Polling shows Ramos currently receiving single-digit support among Democratic voters.

Ramos, 39, attended Hofstra University and is the mother of two school-age sons. She has said her experience with student loan debt reflects broader struggles faced by many New Yorkers trying to afford higher education while supporting families.

“Like millions in my generation, I faced the impossible choice between financial survival and student-loan payments,” Ramos said.

“I prioritized building a safe, stable life for my family. This experience only deepens my commitment to fighting for a fairer economy where people aren’t punished for seeking an education.”

Ramos, who was first elected to the state Senate in 2019, currently chairs its Labor Committee and previously served as a City Hall aide under former Mayor Bill de Blasio. She is the daughter of Hispanic immigrants.

During a recent editorial board meeting with The Post, Ramos again referenced her financial difficulties, stating, “That is my reality.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Education announced it will resume collections on defaulted federal student loans beginning May 5. Collections had been paused since March 2020 and are expected to affect approximately 5.3 million borrowers.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon said American taxpayers “will no longer be forced to serve as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies,” while criticizing the Biden administration’s blocked attempts to cancel billions in student-loan debt.
