New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has come under renewed scrutiny after publicly reaffirming his proposal to redirect the city’s property tax burden from outer borough residents to what his campaign calls “richer and whiter neighborhoods.”

As The Gateway Pundit reported, Mamdani, a state assemblyman representing parts of Queens and the Democratic nominee for mayor, outlined the plan on his campaign website.

The proposal states that current tax structures place an unfair burden on homeowners in the outer boroughs and calls for adjustments that would place more responsibility on wealthier areas of the city, which Mamdani identifies as being both affluent and “whiter.”

The language used in the campaign’s platform has prompted criticism from elected officials, advocacy groups, and local residents, who argue that the plan appears to target specific communities based on racial and economic demographics.

Detractors have pointed to the proposal as a form of race-based redistribution that could deepen divisions in the city.

During an appearance on MSNBC, Mamdani was questioned about the intent behind the policy. Rather than denying the racial and class-based framing, he attempted to reframe the issue, describing it as a “tax justice” approach and an “assessment” of the city’s structural inequities.

“We’re simply assessing where the burden currently lies and how we can adjust the structure so it better reflects fairness,” Mamdani said in the interview. “The current system disproportionately affects communities of color in the outer boroughs.”

Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist and is also a practicing Muslim, has drawn attention for previous proposals including defunding the NYPD, establishing publicly run grocery stores, and ending all cooperation between city agencies and federal immigration enforcement.

His latest proposal on property taxes has now become a focal point of the 2025 mayoral race, as opponents argue it represents a divisive approach to city governance. Supporters of the plan claim it will alleviate burdens on working-class neighborhoods.

New York City currently employs a complex property tax system that has been criticized for inconsistencies across boroughs. However, Mamdani’s emphasis on “whiter” neighborhoods as targets for increased taxation has brought race explicitly into the debate over fiscal policy.

Mamdani has not walked back any language or proposals, and the campaign has stood by its platform amid growing criticism.
