The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), launched by President Donald Trump earlier this year, is drawing sharp criticism from Democrats and left-leaning organizations, with some accusing the administration of weaponizing federal authority to investigate entities within the Democratic political ecosystem.
President Trump’s goal, according to administration officials, is to identify and eliminate taxpayer waste, including government funds allegedly used to subsidize partisan political activity.
The New York Times reported this week that the Trump administration has taken steps through DOGE to review Democratic-aligned organizations, law firms, and nonprofit groups that receive federal funds or tax-exempt status, as part of a broader initiative to streamline government and root out misuse of taxpayer dollars.

“Executive actions intended to cripple top Democratic law firms. Investigations of Democratic fund-raising and organizing platforms. Ominous suggestions that nonprofits aligned with Democrats or critical of President Trump should have their tax exemptions revoked,” the Times reported.

According to the article, a select group of White House officials has been coordinating the identification of targets and reviewing past investigations to expand the initiative.

The sources cited in the report requested anonymity but indicated that the effort is part of a larger strategy to investigate longstanding political structures that receive federal support or favorable tax treatment.
“Mr. Trump and his allies are aggressively attacking the players and machinery that power the left, taking a series of highly partisan official actions that, if successful, will threaten to hobble Democrats’ ability to compete in elections for years to come,” the New York Times article stated.
Administration officials have defended the initiative as a legal and necessary measure to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not being used to fund political operations.
The White House maintains that DOGE is focused on efficiency, transparency, and compliance with the law—particularly in areas where government funding intersects with partisan political activity.
In response, Democrats in Congress have characterized the efforts as a “constitutional crisis” and have suggested that DOGE is being used to target political opponents.
Critics have pointed to President Trump’s previous impeachment in 2019 as a precedent, when he was accused of leveraging foreign policy for political gain.
“But using the levers of government to target the opposition has long been considered an abuse of power, sometimes leading to prosecution,” the Times article added.
Attorney General Pam Bondi has not commented on specific investigations, but sources familiar with the department’s activities have confirmed that DOGE is operating under legal authorities granted to the executive branch to evaluate the use of federal funds, tax-exempt statuses, and nonprofit oversight.
Reports of vandalism at Tesla showrooms and incidents involving attacks on property associated with Elon Musk have also emerged, with activists citing Musk’s vocal support for Trump’s efficiency efforts as a motivating factor.
The Department of Government Efficiency has not disclosed a list of organizations currently under review.
However, the administration has said that future updates will be released following completion of internal audits and legal reviews.
While no formal legal action has been announced, officials indicated that the White House will continue supporting DOGE’s efforts to examine government expenditures and organizational compliance with federal guidelines.
The program remains active, and the administration has stated that it will pursue accountability measures where misuse of funds or improper political activity is identified.
