Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino announced a series of internal reforms aimed at restoring accountability, improving agent readiness, and addressing past missteps within the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Bongino shared the updates on Friday through a post on X, outlining several ongoing initiatives under the leadership of FBI Director Kash Patel.

Bongino wrote that the Bureau is undergoing “important cultural changes” as it moves to restructure field leadership and remove individuals found to have violated professional standards or introduced partisanship into the agency’s operations.

“The accountability process is ongoing as we move disciplined, and focused, leaders into critical positions in the field. And, we are removing employees who have violated their oaths, and those who invited partisanship into the workplace. The process is ongoing, and will not stop,” Bongino stated.

The FBI, under the new administration, has faced heightened scrutiny for conduct in recent years related to internal oversight, politicization, and operational transparency.

In response, leadership has indicated a firm commitment to restructuring procedures and reinforcing standards across the agency.

Bongino also confirmed that changes are being implemented in the hiring pipeline, along with updates to the agency’s physical fitness and defensive tactics training requirements.

“Yes, as reported, we are making changes to the hiring process, the physical fitness requirements, and we are also looking at ways to enhance our defensive tactics training,” he wrote.

According to Bongino, the focus on tactical preparedness stems from a need to ensure agents are equipped to effectively manage high-risk encounters while maintaining the ability to de-escalate situations when appropriate.

“We want the FBI agent workforce to have the physical skill set to de-escalate when necessary,” Bongino said.

“Particularly for when encounters can quickly turn into life or death scenarios.”

Director Kash Patel and Bongino have reportedly held several internal meetings on the matter, emphasizing the need for long-term, structural adjustments to policy and procedure.

The reforms are part of a broader effort to rebuild trust, both internally within the agency and externally with the American public.

“We are also working on an enhanced compliance process to ensure many of the mistakes of the past are never repeated,” Bongino stated.

“Both the Director and I have had multiple meetings on this topic and we are working on substantive changes to current procedures. We must be held accountable, both internally to management, and externally to the people we work for, given the gravity of our responsibilities,” he added.

Since being named Director, Kash Patel has signaled an intention to prioritize transparency, ethics, and operational integrity.

Bongino’s statements reflect the administration’s intent to address concerns raised by lawmakers and citizens over past conduct at the Bureau.

Further details on the implementation timeline of the reforms have not been disclosed.

However, senior leadership has stated that the process is active and ongoing, with additional updates expected in the coming months as changes continue to roll out across FBI field offices and headquarters.
