Batya Ungar-Sargon criticized former President Barack Obama for condemning the Trump administration’s deportation agenda following the death of Alex Pretti, arguing that the criticism misplaces responsibility and ignores the role of state and local officials who refused to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.
In remarks responding to Obama’s statement issued after Pretti was killed during a confrontation involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minneapolis, Ungar-Sargon said the former president had reversed the facts surrounding the incident.
“Friends, we’ve let President Obama down. The former Democratic President would like you to know that the Trump administration’s deportation agenda is a threat to our nation,” Ungar-Sargon said.

She added that Obama made the claim in a statement published after Pretti “was tragically killed in a scuffle with ICE agents.”
Ungar-Sargon said the incident should instead highlight the consequences of noncooperation with federal authorities.
“Obama has it exactly backwards. It’s the state and local officials whose refusal to cooperate with ICE led to prettiest death,” she said.
“Were they cooperating, ICE wouldn’t be forced to track down illegal criminals in the streets where an organized network of activists that included Pretti impeded their every move.”

She cited newly released footage that she said showed Pretti confronting ICE agents weeks before his death.
“New footage published by the news movement shows Pretti violently confronting ICE two weeks prior to his death,” Ungar-Sargon said.
Ungar-Sargon emphasized that acknowledging those details does not diminish the seriousness of the loss of life.
“This new footage doesn’t change the fact that Freddie’s death was a tragedy, something we can all agree on,” she said.
She noted that President Donald Trump described the incident as “a very sad situation.”
Ungar-Sargon questioned Obama’s decision to publicly criticize deportation efforts while referencing material encouraging opposition to ICE operations.
“But should President Obama really be linking to articles entitled How to help the resistance to ICE in Minnesota and beyond, especially given that deporting illegal migrants is literally what the majority of Americans voted for,” she said.
“It’s certainly a far cry from what he said about immigration when he was in office.”
She pointed to Obama’s record while serving as president, noting that his administration carried out large numbers of deportations and earned him a reputation within his own party for strict enforcement.
“That wasn’t just talk. President Obama was known as the deporter in chief in his day,” Ungar-Sargon said.
She argued that opposition from Democrats intensified only when enforcement was carried out by a Republican administration.
“Of course, he didn’t have to worry about violent protesters. The left never bothered when it was their guy doing it,” she said.
Ungar-Sargon said Democrats’ current objections are not about tactics but about rejecting deportation altogether.
“The Democrats claim to support enforcing our laws. They claim to support deporting criminals and even having a closed border,” she said.
“It’s how ICE is doing it that they say they have a problem with nonsense. The demand isn’t ice nicer. It’s ice out they oppose Trump’s entire deportation agenda.”
She also criticized President Joe Biden for weighing in on the Minneapolis incident.
“Joe Biden weighing in tells you everything you need to know,” Ungar-Sargon said.
“The same people who, for four years, denied and then defended a completely open border think they can now lecture us about exactly how one may go about deporting the violent criminals that they opened the border to.”
