During her Senate confirmation hearing for Attorney General, nominee Pam Bondi faced sharp questioning from Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) regarding the principles of prosecution and the perceived politicization of the Justice Department.

Pam Bondi is sworn in during a Senate Judiciary committee hearing on her nomination to be Attorney General of the United States on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025 in Washington, DC.

The exchange highlighted contrasting views on how justice should be administered in the United States.

Whitehouse began by underscoring the proper role of a prosecutor, stating, “It would not be appropriate for a prosecutor to start with a name and look for a crime. It’s a prosecutor’s job to start with a crime and look for a name, correct?”

Bondi agreed with the principle but used the opportunity to address what she sees as the troubling politicization of justice in recent years, particularly in relation to former President Donald Trump.

“Senator, I think that is the whole problem with the weaponization that we have seen the last four years and what’s been happening to Donald Trump,” Bondi responded.

“They targeted Donald Trump. They went after him, actually, starting back in 2016 they targeted his campaign. They have launched countless investigations against him.”

Bondi pledged that, if confirmed, she would work to depoliticize the Department of Justice and ensure that all Americans are treated equally under the law.

“That will not be the case. If I am Attorney General, I will not politicize that office. I will not target people simply because of their political affiliation,” she said.

“Justice will be administered even-handedly throughout this country.”

Bondi also emphasized the need for national unity, warning against the dangers of division.

“Senator, we’ve got to bring this country back together. We’ve got to move forward, or we’re going to lose our country,” she stated.

The exchange highlighted broader concerns about the perception of bias in the Justice Department and the potential for political motivations to influence prosecutions.

Bondi’s comments reflect a commitment to restoring public confidence in the impartiality of the nation’s legal system.

As the confirmation process continues, Bondi’s remarks signal her intention to prioritize fairness and unity in her role as Attorney General, should she be confirmed.
