Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi faced a contentious line of questioning from Rep. Adam Schiff during her Senate confirmation hearing.

Schiff pressed Bondi on her approach to presidential pardons and investigations, leading to a fiery exchange between the two.

Schiff began by questioning Bondi’s stance on presidential pardons, particularly regarding individuals who have assaulted police officers.

“Are you prepared to advise the President not to pardon people who beat police officers?” Schiff asked.

Pam Bondi is sworn in during a Senate Judiciary committee hearing on her nomination to be Attorney General of the United States on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025 in Washington, DC.

Bondi responded, emphasizing the President’s authority over pardons but assuring that she would review each case individually.

“Senator, as I said, the pardons are at the direction of the President. We will look, and we will advise. I will look at every case on a case-by-case basis, and I abhor violence to police officers,” Bondi said.

Schiff pressed further, asking if Bondi would oppose the issuance of blanket pardons.

“Will it be your advice to the President? No. Mr. President, I need to go over them on a case-by-case basis. Do not issue blanket pardons. Will that be your advice to the President?” he asked.

Bondi reiterated her commitment to thorough review. “Senator, I have not looked at any of those files. If confirmed, I will look at the files for the pardons as well as the ongoing investigations,” she replied.

When Schiff suggested Bondi would be unable to review hundreds of cases on the first day, she pushed back.

“Can I answer the question? I would have plenty of staff. You said, ‘of course you won’t,’” Bondi retorted. “I’m not going to mislead this body nor you.”

The discussion then shifted to the possibility of investigating former Rep. Liz Cheney, which Schiff suggested had been publicly supported by the President.

“I’m asking you sitting here today whether you are aware of a factual predicate to investigate Liz Cheney?” Schiff inquired.

“Senator, no one has asked me to investigate Liz Cheney. That is a hypothetical,” Bondi responded, dismissing the question as speculative.

Schiff insisted, “The President has called for it publicly. You are aware of that, aren’t you?”

Bondi countered, “No one has asked me to investigate Liz. We’re all so worried about Liz Cheney, Senator…”

When pressed further, Bondi shifted the focus to issues she deemed more pressing.

“You know what we should be worried about? The crime rate in California right now is through the roof. Your robberies are 87% higher than the national average. That’s what I want to be focused on, Senator, if I am confirmed as Attorney General,” she said.
