Virginia Democrats find their prospects in a tailspin in the last couple of weeks. Their Attorney General nominee, Jay Jones, turns out to be stupid enough to commit death wishes for opponents’ children in text format. Gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger froze in a debate with Winsome Earle-Sears when challenged on it. Now polls show a sharp decline in both races, and Democrats need to change the narrative — fast.
He’s fit. He’s rested, coming off his third term in office during the Biden Regency. And now Barack Obama will put himself back in the game — to rescue Democrats from themselves in Virginia:
Former President Barack Obama is endorsing Democratic former Rep. Abigail Spanberger in the Virginia governor’s race and starring in two new digital ads for her campaign.
“Virginia’s elections are some of the most important in the country this year,” Obama says in both ads, shared first with NBC News, which focus on the economy and abortion rights. He also says in both ads, “Every vote counts.”
How desperate is this move? Well, let’s Psaki back four years, when this exact same scenario unfolded. Remember when current governor Glenn Youngkin started to overtake Terry McCauliffe in polling? Virginia Dems called Obama to service in that cycle too:
Former President Barack Obama speaks direct to camera in a new ad for Virginia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Terry McAuliffe, warning voters that their decision will make “a statement about what direction we’re headed in as a country.”
The ad in the notably tight race comes as the latest poll in the contest from Monmouth University finds no clear leader in the race, with McAuliffe and Republican nominee Glenn Youngkin tied at 46% of registered voters.
“Virginia, you have a lot of responsibility this year. Not only are you choosing your next governor, but you’re also making a statement about what direction we’re headed in as a country,” Obama says in the ad. “I know Terry McAuliffe and I can tell you as governor no one worked harder for their state. And I also watched Terry stand strong on the values we all care about: protecting every citizen’s right to vote, fighting climate change, and defending a woman’s right to choose.”
Same tired message. Same tired messenger. Same circumstances. Same … desperation.
And maybe the same result? Tough to say, as Youngkin was in a better polling position than Earle-Sears is at the moment. However, momentum has begun to shift, and Democrats know it. And Obama himself is not the same figure as four years ago, when the post-January 6 political climate was much different. Obama and his entire foreign-policy team just got depantsed in Gaza, and much of his domestic policy team — which also helped run the White House during the Biden Regency — has been discredited in Donald Trump’s successes in closing the borders, enforcing law, and accountability for lawfare waged by Obama’s allies.
Plus, the issue facing Virginia Democrats this time is much worse this time. Four years ago, McAuliffe tried to treat parents objecting to woke policies at school board meetings as “insurrectionists,” attempting to extend the J6 hysteria, and it blew up in his face. McAuliffe didn’t go on to wish death on their children to teach them a lesson, as Jones did on reproducible media, and wish death on cops in other conversations. All Spanberger and other Virginia Democrats had to do was cut off Jones and retract their endorsements, and the issue would have barely caused a blip in the higher-stakes gubernatorial race. Instead, the entire Democrat establishment closed ranks behind Jones, making this an issue in every race in this cycle — and likely in the midterm elections next year, too.
And here’s the real problem with this desperation move. Into this maelstrom comes Obama, as Democrats now want to rescue Spanberger by using Obama’s limited national appeal. However, in doing that, they are effectively transferring Jones’ death-wish scandal to the entire national Democrat establishment, which Obama represents. Does Obama endorse Jones’ statements? Does he think that Republican children should die for political points? Because Obama’s intervention in Virginia to rescue their ticket after Jones’ texts and conversations got exposed certainly suggests that he does. If the parties were swapped, every media outlet in the US would ask every Republican officeholder they could find whether they endorsed Jones’ statements in a similar situation.
This is the equivalent of doubling down on a 13 in blackjack when you’re on your last chip in Vegas. When this blows up, it won’t just stay in Vegas, either. Democrats are about to turn one losing hand into a casino meltdown.
