According to a statement from the San Jose Police Department, the incident occurred around 3 a.m. on July 20 at the Almaden Valley Station Post Office. Officers responded to a report of a vehicle fire inside the lobby of the building.
“When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a vehicle had been driven into the post office and caught fire causing the entire building to catch on fire,” the department stated.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) confirmed the incident and said postal inspectors are investigating the matter as a “potentially intentional act.” The agency is leading the investigation, while San Jose police and fire departments continue to assist.

Richard Tillman, 44, was taken into custody at the scene and later booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of arson. His bail was set at $60,000, and his next court appearance is scheduled for July 23, according to jail records.
Roughly 50 fire personnel responded to the blaze, which was extinguished without any reported injuries. However, San Jose Fire Battalion Chief Josh Staley told NBC News that the two-alarm fire caused significant damage to the front of the building and likely destroyed some mail inside.
CNN reported that Tillman told officers he had livestreamed the incident on a social media platform, although officials have not yet confirmed the platform used or whether video evidence was recovered.

The motive behind the crash has not been publicly disclosed. Authorities are continuing to examine whether the act was premeditated and whether additional charges may be forthcoming.
Richard Tillman is the brother of Pat Tillman, the former Arizona Cardinals safety who left the NFL to enlist in the U.S. Army following the September 11 attacks. Pat Tillman was killed in Afghanistan in 2004 at the age of 27 by friendly fire.
