Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced that classified information leaks tied to the intelligence community are now the subject of a criminal investigation, after her office referred the matter to the Department of Justice and the FBI.
Gabbard made the announcement during a segment on Fox News, where she emphasized that rooting out political abuse in the intelligence system is central to the mandate given by voters who elected President Donald Trump.
Gabbard pointed to the politicization and weaponization of intelligence as a direct threat to national security and public trust.

“One of the reasons why the American people voted resoundingly for President Trump was to root out the kind of politicization and weaponization of intelligence that has really undermined the trust the American people have in the intelligence community and the national security state,” Gabbard said.
“But really what also directly undermines our own national security.”
Gabbard, who now serves in a national security oversight capacity, said she made her position on the matter clear from the beginning.
“So I made it very clear to the US Senate, to the American people, when I had the honor of being appointed to this position, that we will not allow this to continue,” she said.

“We take this very seriously.”
She directly addressed the illegality of leaking classified information and stated her team has already conducted an internal investigation into recent incidents.
As a result, referrals for criminal prosecution have been formally submitted to federal law enforcement.
“It is illegal to leak classified information, and so what you’re seeing here is me carrying out in the promise and the mandate the American people gave Trump,” Gabbard said.
“We conducted our own internal investigation. We have referred them now to the Department of Justice and the FBI for an official criminal investigation, because these are crimes and people need to be held accountable to put a stop to this.”
Her remarks align with the broader Trump administration policy of confronting what it describes as a pattern of intelligence abuses, leaks, and politically motivated interference that plagued the federal government in prior years.
The announcement follows months of increasing scrutiny on how sensitive intelligence has been handled, particularly in cases where classified information was leaked to media outlets.
Republican lawmakers and administration officials have repeatedly raised concerns that unauthorized disclosures are being used to undermine elected leadership and disrupt national security policy.
No individuals have yet been named in connection with the internal review, and no official charges have been announced.
However, Gabbard’s statement signals that her office expects the DOJ and FBI to investigate the matter thoroughly.
“This has to stop,” Gabbard said.
“We’re going to ensure it does.”
