The National Institutes of Health has officially ended controversial sepsis experiments on beagles, marking a significant change in federal animal testing policy under the leadership of NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, appointed by President Donald Trump.
The decision comes after years of public pressure and activism from animal rights groups, particularly People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), as reported by The Gateway Pundit.
Despite openly celebrating the outcome, PETA failed to acknowledge the Trump administration’s role in bringing the experiments to an end.

In an official statement released this week, PETA applauded the NIH’s decision to cancel at least one of the long-running sepsis experiments involving beagles.
The group credited more than a decade of protest, public engagement, and legal action, including a 2021 lawsuit, for prompting the change.
“PETA welcomes the long-overdue news that NIH is canceling at least one of the appalling sepsis experiments that inflicted prolonged suffering on animals in federal and federally funded laboratories,” the organization stated.
Since 2013, PETA has advocated for the complete elimination of such testing across all species, calling the research “cruel and scientifically worthless.”

The group emphasized that the dogs used in the experiments had been purchased from Envigo, a breeding facility that was shut down following a PETA undercover investigation. That probe exposed the facility’s conditions and resulted in the rescue of over 4,000 dogs.
While PETA highlighted the end of the program as a victory for animal welfare, its public statement made no mention of the Trump administration or its appointee, Dr. Bhattacharya, who oversees NIH policy.
Bhattacharya confirmed in a recent FOX News interview that PETA had sent him flowers in appreciation of the decision.
PETA also posted a thank-you message on social media.
Victory! @peta exposed failed sepsis experiments on animals & even sued NIH under Pres Biden to end them. Now the sepsis beagle study is ended! Thank you @NIHDirector_Jay and for shoutout at the end! https://t.co/2iVmATUBOF

Despite these gestures, the omission of the Trump administration’s involvement in the official statement drew criticism.
The decision to halt the experiments came under an executive-led push to reform federal medical research practices, a shift that began after President Trump resumed office in January.
The experiments involved inducing sepsis in dogs—typically beagles—to test medical responses. Animal welfare organizations had long targeted these experiments as inhumane and unnecessary.
The recent NIH reversal represents one of the most high-profile cancellations of government-funded animal research in recent years.
The Gateway Pundit has covered this issue extensively, including past investigations into the NIH’s testing practices and the involvement of federal agencies in animal procurement.
While the left-leaning PETA publicly praised the outcome, critics noted their silence on who ultimately made the call. The administration’s role in halting the experiments remains absent from the record, despite bipartisan agreement on the decision’s merits.
