PGA golfer Billy Horschel proved he’s not just skilled with a club but also fearless when it comes to Florida wildlife.
During the first round of the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach on Thursday, Horschel had an unexpected encounter with an alligator, and he handled it like a true Floridian, as reported by The Independent Journal Review.
As the reptile casually wandered onto the course, Horschel—who played his college golf for the Florida Gators—didn’t hesitate. Instead of waiting for tournament officials to intervene, he used his wedge to encourage the gator to move along.

The creature obliged, scampering away without any drama, leaving spectators entertained and impressed.
The crowd certainly appreciated Horschel’s cool-headed approach.
One fan quipped, “That’s a gator getting the gator,” a nod to his days at the University of Florida. When asked about the moment, Horschel dismissed any notion of fear, showing his deep familiarity with the Sunshine State’s famous reptiles.

“I’m not afraid of gators,” he told the Associated Press.
“Listen, as I tell most people, they’re more afraid of you. The majority of the time, they’re only going to come after you during mating season when they’re a little aggressive and then if you’re around their nest when they’ve got some eggs. The majority of the time, they’re fine.”
This isn’t the first time Horschel has taken charge on the course. Last year at the WM Phoenix Open, he confronted a heckler who was mouthing off about another golfer’s swing. Unlike many in the sports world who tolerate nonsense from rowdy fans, Horschel wasn’t having it.
“Buddy, when he is focused on the shot, shut the hell up, man! Come on, he’s trying to hit a damn golf shot here. It’s our f*cking job.”
Horschel’s no-nonsense attitude and quick wit have made him a favorite among fans who appreciate authenticity over political correctness.
Whether it’s shutting down an obnoxious spectator or handling a gator like it’s just another day at the office, Horschel brings an edge to the often buttoned-up world of professional golf.
In a sport where some players seem more focused on virtue signaling than the game itself, it’s refreshing to see someone like Horschel who isn’t afraid to speak his mind—or stand his ground against an alligator.
