On New Year’s Day, an explosion involving a rented Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas claimed the life of the suspect and injured seven others. Tesla CEO Elon Musk quickly addressed the situation, clarifying that the explosion was unrelated to the Cybertruck’s design or functionality.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, alongside the FBI, is investigating the explosion as a potential act of terrorism. Initial findings indicate the vehicle’s bed carried a mix of fireworks, gas tanks, and camping fuel, which were detonated via a controlled system reportedly triggered by the driver.

Notably, the Cybertruck had been rented through the Turo app—the same platform linked to another tragic attack involving a pickup truck in New Orleans earlier that day.

Despite the blast’s intensity, the Cybertruck’s innovative design played a crucial role in mitigating damage to the surrounding area. Its unique stainless steel exoskeleton absorbed the impact and directed the blast upwards, preventing catastrophic destruction at the Trump International Hotel.

Remarkably, the hotel’s glass doors, just steps away from the explosion, remained intact.

Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill highlighted this in a press conference, stating, “If you look on that video, you’ll see that the front glass doors at the Trump Hotel were not even broken by that blast, which they were parked directly in front of.”

Initially designed for bullet resistance, the Cybertruck’s 3mm-thick stainless steel exoskeleton showcased unexpected resilience against explosive forces.

Musk praised the vehicle’s performance, noting, “The evil knuckleheads picked the wrong vehicle for a terrorist attack. Cybertruck actually contained the explosion and directed the blast upwards. Not even the glass doors of the lobby were broken.”
