A single-engine aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Kalispell City Airport in Montana on Monday afternoon, causing a large explosion and fire that damaged multiple parked planes and sent smoke billowing over the area.

Two people sustained minor injuries.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m., according to Kalispell Police Chief Jordan Venezio and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The plane, which was carrying four people, lost control during landing and crashed onto the runway before colliding with several parked aircraft.

The impact ignited fires on multiple planes, and the flames spread to a grassy area before being contained by fire crews.

Video footage captured at the scene shows a massive fireball erupting on the runway, followed by a thick cloud of black smoke rising into the sky.

Kalispell Fire Chief Jay Hagen said witnesses reported seeing the plane crash-land near the end of the runway and then careen into another aircraft.

The four occupants were able to exit the plane on their own after it came to a stop.

“Two were slightly hurt and treated at the airport,” Hagen confirmed, adding that no one was aboard the second aircraft that was struck.

Ron Danielson, who manages a nearby inn, said he both heard and saw the crash before dark plumes of smoke filled the sky over the city.

The Kalispell City Airport, located just south of the city center, is a small municipal facility serving the local community.

Kalispell has a population of roughly 30,000 and is located in northwest Montana, known as a gateway to Glacier National Park.

Local artist Ben Garrison shared photographs from the scene showing large clouds of black smoke over the airfield and visible from downtown Kalispell.

Chief Venezio said the FAA will lead a full investigation into the crash to determine the cause.

The agency confirmed it will be gathering flight data, interviewing witnesses, and inspecting the wreckage as part of its ongoing inquiry.

The fire caused by the crash was fully extinguished on-site, and crews worked to clear debris from the runway.

Authorities said the airport will remain operational but with potential temporary delays as the investigation continues and cleanup is completed.

The crash marks one of the most serious incidents at Kalispell City Airport in recent years.

FAA records will be reviewed as part of the investigation to determine whether the aircraft involved had any prior maintenance or safety issues.
