A Louisiana man accused of intentionally striking and dragging a police officer with his truck for 500 feet is now facing a murder charge after the officer died from his injuries, as reported by The Blaze.

Authorities said 41-year-old Gad Black hit Sgt. Caleb Eisworth with his Ford F-150 in June and boasted about the incident on social media.

Eisworth, a 23-year veteran of the police force, was hospitalized with severe injuries and remained in medical care for more than two months before succumbing to those injuries on Sunday.

Prosecutors said the incident occurred around 11 a.m. near the intersection of Greenwell Springs Road and Joor Road while Eisworth was riding home on his police motorcycle. Black allegedly wrote on Facebook following the incident, “Check Him Out on Joor Rd. Stretched One.”

Black appeared in court virtually on Monday before Commissioner Nicole Robinson, where prosecutors formally upgraded his charges to include murder. He was previously facing attempted murder charges, as well as hate-crime charges.

East Baton Rouge DA Hillar Moore says charges against Gad Black will be upgraded to first-degree murder in the death of BRPD Sgt. Caleb Eisworth.
Moore also confirmed the death penalty is being considered, pending the results of a previously scheduled sanity hearing in the case. pic.twitter.com/KQPDDxNIHU

Black’s family issued a public statement extending condolences to Eisworth’s loved ones.

“On behalf of the Black family, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Sergeant Caleb Eisworth. We are heartbroken to learn of his passing, and our prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

Eisworth’s death has intensified the legal proceedings.

A sanity hearing for Black is scheduled for September 3 before Judge Donald Johnson. East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore confirmed that the court will determine Black’s mental condition at the time of the offense as well as his competency to stand trial.

“The sanity issue has been raised, not sure if the commission has been selected or picked, but I anticipate that one will be,” Moore said.

East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Sid Gautreaux condemned the act following Black’s arrest in June.

“This was a deliberate and cowardly attack on an officer — one of our community’s protectors — and it strikes at the very heart of public safety.”

Eisworth had served more than two decades in law enforcement. The department has not yet announced memorial arrangements.

Black remains in custody as prosecutors prepare for the upcoming competency hearing. The case has drawn widespread attention, both for the violent nature of the alleged attack and the social media posts attributed to the suspect in its aftermath.
