Pravda Says Men Radicalized, But Data Shows That It Is Women Who Have Been

We hear all the time about how young men have lurched rightward, moving toward a fascist view of things. 

There are endless thinkpieces out there trying to divine why men have become so right-wing. The evidence, they say, is clear: the gender gap between men and women is growing, which obviously shows that something is deeply wrong with men. 

But…if you dive into the available data, it shows that men have not moved much at all ideologically. The movement is almost entirely among women, who have lurched—dramatically, as a group—leftward. So far left that in many cases, they verge on radical revolutionaries.

On average, in Western countries, men are centrist to mildly conservative in political outlook, but since about 2015 there has been a significant shift leftward among women. The growing gender gap in political outlooks has not been caused by any significant shift in men’s attitudes, but rather by a huge leftward swing among women. 

Meet Lucy Martinez. Martinez is an elementary school teacher from Chicago who mocked the assassination of Charlie Kirk during yesterday’s “No Kings” protest.

Recent Gallup data, for instance, shows that men’s political attitudes have remained fairly constant, but the country has moved significantly leftward as women’s views have moved. 

The trend in ideology by age group within each gender shows that this increased liberalism is largely the result of stronger-than-average pro-liberal shifts among 18- to 29-year-old women and women aged 65 and older. The former represents fundamental differences in the belief systems of women entering adulthood in the past decade versus in prior decades. By contrast, the change among senior women may be more about generational replacement, with formerly middle-aged women bringing their slightly more liberal attitudes into their golden years.

Meanwhile, the politics of men have either become slightly more liberal (as seen with the 30-to-49 and 65-and-older age groups) or haven’t changed (as with adults aged 18 to 29 and 50 to 64).

Thus, a widening of the ideological gaps between men and women over time has been due to women becoming more liberal at a faster rate than men, rather than women and men moving in different ideological directions.

The dramatic ideological shift to the left is exactly among the age groups you see in the protests: senior women and women under 30, although women of all ages have, on average, shifted leftward.

The Guardian, a left-wing British newspaper, looked at this trend and celebrated it as a great opportunity, of course, even while acknowledging that the ideological divide had little to do with men’s attitudes shifting. What the left needs to do is quit trying to appeal to men and go all-in on getting radicalized women to support them.

Famously, Renee Good was a mother of three (although only one lived with her), and she spent her days getting into dangerous confrontations with ICE. Other mothers have been bringing their children to protests and even riots where teargas is deployed. In two cases I know of, women were confronting ICE agents aggressively as their children stood next to them.

This is not sane behavior and indicates something deeply wrong with these people, and not merely in an ideological sense. However strongly one feels about an issue, a normal person would prioritize the safety of a helpless child over expressing outrage. This is almost the definition of deranged—having no ability to weigh various goods and risks and make appropriate decisions.

How else do you get somebody who prioritizes the well-being of a rapist or murderer over your own child? Because a large fraction of the people ICE is arresting are known violent criminals, and none of these “protesters” know whether the illegal immigrant they are risking their lives for has raped a child or committed murder or manslaughter. There are ways to express disapproval without risking everything, and that is what politics is all about.

These people are not engaged in politics; they are post-political and engaged in revolutionary activity. With children at their sides. 

All the talk about Groypers, who do exist, of course, is beside the point. Their number has not really increased, although their prominence has because all the focus is on what’s wrong with men. There have always been a fringe group of men who are disaffected and hateful, but their numbers have not, the evidence shows,  grown. 

The number of radical women has. By a lot. And they are much more radical. You can see it in the confrontations with ICE, in the protests, and in the growing ideological divide between men and women.

Hateful young men have been getting all the media attention and thinkpieces, but they are barely a problem in the real world. Ordinary men have not shifted at all, ideologically. 

It’s women. Obviously, not all women, but if we want to get back to normality, we must ask: why have many women radicalized?
