In a surprising twist, President-elect Donald Trump suggested he might consider granting a pardon to New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

During a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort on Monday, Trump didn’t shy away from addressing the possibility, stating bluntly, “I would. I think that he was treated pretty unfairly,” as reported by The New York Post.

Adams, currently facing federal bribery and corruption charges, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

The indictment accuses him of accepting bribes from Turkish officials and nationals, including luxury flight upgrades. These charges have left the mayor fighting for both his political career and his freedom.

Trump’s comments have sparked speculation about his potential role in Adams’ legal battle. Known for his no-nonsense critique of federal prosecutors, Trump expressed skepticism about the severity of the accusations.

He remarked, “Now, I haven’t seen the gravity of it all, but it seems like being upgraded on an airplane many years ago. I think everybody here has been upgraded.”

The former president added, “I’d have to see it because I don’t know the facts.” While acknowledging he isn’t fully briefed on the case, Trump’s remarks indicate he views the charges as an overreach by an aggressive legal system.

Many in Adams’ circle see Trump’s presidency as a potential lifeline, whether through a direct pardon or by appointing someone more favorable to Adams’ cause in the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s Office, which is spearheading the prosecution.

Trump’s recent comments only reinforce their hopes.

Trump has long criticized what he views as politically motivated legal actions. His willingness to defend Adams may surprise some, given their differing political affiliations, but it aligns with Trump’s broader narrative of railing against what he sees as a weaponized justice system.

Adams, meanwhile, remains steadfast in his denial of the charges, maintaining that he has done nothing illegal. His legal team is preparing for what could be a lengthy and high-stakes trial.

Trump’s potential involvement, whether through public statements or legal actions, could significantly influence the trajectory of the case.

As the legal battle unfolds, the political implications are undeniable. Trump’s willingness to consider a pardon for Adams underscores his disdain for federal prosecutors and his readiness to disrupt political norms.

For now, both Adams and his supporters are likely watching closely, hoping the incoming administration might offer an unexpected reprieve.
