Democratic Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro spent over one minute on the House floor shouting at her Republican colleagues over a continuing resolution (CR) bill that she claimed would take away healthcare.
The House of Representatives passed the Republicans’ CR to fund government operations through Nov. 21, granting congressional appropriators additional time to strike a deal on government funding for the remainder of fiscal year 2026. Before the vote, DeLauro raged that the House Republicans did not try to make a deal with Democrats because of President Donald Trump.
“[Trump] has told Republicans that pass this Republican continuing resolution, jam it down the Democrats’ throat. That’s the direction that the president would like to take us. He would like to take us to a shutdown and the Republican leadership and this House has taken this partisan route. Democrats have been overwhelmingly interested in sitting down and talking about how we keep the government open. The fact of the matter is the issues that are on the table here in this effort that are critically important, yes, are healthcare issues. And you know, what are we fighting against? We’re not going to support a partisan Republican bill that guts healthcare for the American people.”
The congresswoman then accused Republicans of slashing Medicaid for 15 million Americans in the “big, beautiful bill” which passed in July. The law aims at reforming the government’s massive spending on Medicaid and requires able-bodied adult Medicaid recipients to complete at least 80 hours per month of work to stay eligible. “It really is a fallacy. That is the fallacy. Because 67 pages of the 91 in this continuing resolution deal with healthcare extensions one way or another. Whether they’re for veterans, whether they’re for others. That is what’s in there … I am happy to share with all of my colleagues, Democrats and Republicans, how much increase that is going to cost to their constituents in their district and it’s also going to tell them how many people in their state are going to lose their healthcare coverage that they have! It is in black and white, and the people of their districts and their communities are going to know all about it,” DeLauro continued.
The Connecticut congresswoman said that she is willing to keep the government open while calling on her colleagues to vote against the bill that would prevent a government shutdown.
Trump called on every House Republican to vote in favor of the legislation in a Truth Social post on Thursday. Republican Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Victoria Spartz of Indiana voted against the measure. Democratic Maine Rep. Jared Golden was the lone member of his party to vote in favor of the resolution.
