The summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded Friday in Alaska following nearly three hours of talks.

Both leaders described the discussions as productive, though no ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict was announced.

The joint press conference that followed highlighted areas of potential cooperation between the two countries and signaled a possible shift in relations.

President Trump emphasized that the meeting was a “starting point” for future engagement.

Putin echoed the sentiment, stating that it was important for the United States and Russia “to turn the page” and move toward renewed cooperation.

While the absence of a ceasefire announcement drew attention, one exchange at the press conference stood out.

Putin directly supported Trump’s long-held assertion that the war in Ukraine would not have occurred if Trump had been in office instead of former President Joe Biden.

“In the end, I would like to add one more thing. I’d like to remind you that in 2022, during the last contact with the previous administration, I tried to convince my previous American colleague…that the situation should not be brought to the point of no return when it would come to hostilities,” Putin said.

“I said it quite directly back then that it’s a big mistake. Today when President Trump [said] that if he was the president back then, there would be no war. And I’m quite sure that it would indeed be so, I can confirm that. I think that overall, me and President Trump have built a very good businesslike and trustworthy contact. And I have every reason to believe that moving down this path we can come…the sooner the better, to the end of the conflict in Ukraine.”

Trump did not specify what agreements, if any, were reached during the summit but indicated that he plans to contact Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as well as European leaders in the coming days to provide updates on the talks.

Putin, for his part, said the discussions marked the beginning of a new stage in U.S.-Russia relations.

“It’s very important for Russia and the United States to turn the page to go back to cooperation,” he said.

He added that “the agreement that we reached together will help bring us close to that goal and we will pave the path towards peace in Ukraine.”

Trump: “Vladimir Putin said something — one of the most interesting things. He said ‘your election was rigged because you have mail in voting.’ He said, ‘mail in voting, every election — no country has mail in voting. The Alaska summit marked one of the most direct conversations between the two presidents since Trump’s return to the White House.

Both men presented the meeting as cordial and constructive, with a focus on future steps toward resolving tensions.

While Putin did not elaborate on why he believed the conflict in Ukraine would have been avoided under Trump’s leadership, his comments reinforced the perception that leadership in Washington has had a decisive influence on global events.

The acknowledgment from Moscow also underlined Trump’s claim that his administration maintained stronger deterrence during his earlier term.

The summit closed without a firm timeline for next steps, but both leaders suggested ongoing dialogue would continue.

Trump signaled that his upcoming calls with Zelensky and European allies would be part of efforts to explore a path forward. Putin said he viewed the meeting as a foundation for de-escalation, though no detailed framework was presented.

For now, the Alaska summit stands as an opening chapter in renewed talks between Washington and Moscow, with future developments likely hinging on how both leaders follow through on their commitments to pursue cooperation and explore solutions to the war in Ukraine.
